Marlene Raats Art

Marlene Raats Art Marlene is an oil paint artist that uses mainly a palette knife and specializes in portraits. Every face tells a life story which I try to capture.

I've always been very creative and did many crochet and embroidery projects early in my life. The urge to paint started in my early forties and I heeded the call and initiated art classes. Over the years I had wonderful teachers like Johanna Kruger Prinsloo (ArtKat.co.za), Hilary Keegan (artschoolbedfordview.co.za) and the late Eugene Hurter. I was also truly inspired by the late Louis Audie after

a group art class visit to his home in Graskop. He was truly a master of color and unselfishly shared his knowledge with fellow artists. Together with Eugene Hurter, Esmé Naudé, Miena Van Wyk and some others, we've had quite a few exhibitions in Mpumalanga from 2015 to 2019 which included the yearly Uplands School Festival in White River. Even though I started out by painting any subject, people (and especially the mystery of a woman) fascinated me. As it evolved I fell in love with the palette knife and started using it exclusively, giving an old-worldly feel to modern subjects. This then became portraits with the palette knife, utilizing the lovely texture achieved on faces.
