[BODIES OF TWO YOUNG PEOPLE FOUND AT A LODGE]

A murder investigation has been launched after two young people, one a current pupil and the other a former pupil of St Stithians College, were found dead at a holiday lodge near Sabie in Mpumalanga.

The bodies of 17-year-old Cameron Waldeck-Cooks, a Grade 11 learner at St Stithians Girls' College, and 19-year-old Ethan Coetzee, who matriculated from St Stithians Boys' College in 2025, were discovered in a lodge room on the morning of 3 August.

Cameron had travelled to the area to take part in a hiking trip with two families as part of her preparations for the Gold level of The President's Award for Youth Empowerment, the South African equivalent of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award.

Police initially opened an inquest into the deaths, but the case was subsequently upgraded to a murder investigation following post-mortem examinations.

Mpumalanga police spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo said preliminary findings indicated that Cameron may have died from strangulation, while Ethan was believed to have died by su***de.

Cameron's parents, Derrick Cooks and Claire Waldeck-Cooks, commissioned an independent forensic pathologist. Their preliminary findings also pointed to strangulation and suffocation.

In a statement, her parents described Cameron as a warm, kind-hearted, and determined young woman and said her death had left an "immeasurable void" in their lives. They appealed to the public and media not to speculate about the circumstances surrounding her death while the investigation is under way.

St Stithians College expressed its deep sadness over Cameron's death, remembering her as a valued member of the school community. She had attended the school since Grade R and was an accomplished rower and netball player.

A memorial service for Cameron is expected to be held later this month.

Police investigations into the circumstances surrounding the deaths are continuing.

[BAIL DENIED AGAIN]

The R100 000 bail appeal by Lekompo musician Lehlogonolo Chauke popularly known as ‘Shebe Maburna’ has been dismissed by the Polokwane High Court in Limpopo.

While delivering judgment, Judge Karin Pillay argued that Shebe committed Schedule 6 offences while on bail.

Chauke is facing multiple charges, including attempted murder, culpable homicide and assault GBH (Grievous Bodily Harm), among others.

The offences were allegedly committed on separate occasions while he was on bail.

Pillay argued that Shebe Maburna only raised the need for medical care for a broken leg in his second bail application.

Judge Pillay ruled that his need for treatment does not qualify as a new fact.

The Judge also ruled that the birth of Maburna’s child this year while he was in custody does not qualify him for release on bail.

[GAUTENG PKTT ARRESTS SUSPECTS IN MURDERS OF EFF MEMBER AARON MAKOLA AND ANC WARD COUNCILLOR THABANG MASEMOLA]

The Acting National Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS), Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane, has commended the newly established Gauteng Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) for making significant breakthroughs in investigations into the murders of political party members and ward councillors in Gauteng.

In the first case, GP PKTT recently arrested two suspects for the murder of Thabang Masemola, an ANC ward 10 councillor in the City Of Tshwane. Masemola was murdered on 08 July 2025 in Mamelodi East.

The two suspects arrested include the alleged hitman and a woman who is believed to have played a role in planning the murder of the councillor.

The pair will reappear before the Mamelodi Magistrate's Court where the PKTT will link the hitman, 41-year-old Vusimuzi Champ Gebuza to two additional cases of murder and attempted murder of two other individuals. These cases all took place in Mamelodi in 2023 and 2024.

In the second case, following the discovery of the body of EFF member Aaron Makola by the PKTT, investigators from the Gauteng PKTT tracked down and arrested his alleged killers.

Over the weekend, three suspects, aged 40, 42 and 44, were arrested and are expected to appear before the Delmas Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, 05 August 2026, on charges of murder, kidnapping and robbery.

Lieutenant General Dimpane has praised the dedication and professionalism of the Gauteng Political Killings Task Team.

"These breakthroughs demonstrate SAPS' unwavering commitment to ensuring that those who commit violent crimes are tracked down and brought before the courts. We commend the Gauteng Political Killings Task Team for their tireless efforts and assure the families of the victims, as well as the people of Gauteng, that we remain resolute in our fight against violent crime and politically motivated killings". Said Dimpane

[MOGOTSI CASE POSTPONED FOR PRE-TRIAL PROCEEDINGS]

The case against 45-year-old North West Businessman byBrown Mogotsi has been postponed by the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court to 20 August 2026 for pre-trial proceedings. The postponement follows the court’s dismissal of the defence’s application requesting the State to provide further particulars. The court found that the State had already furnished the defence with the full contents of the docket and had complied with its disclosure obligations.

It is alleged that on 03 November 2025, Mogotsi reported to the police that, while driving alone in Vosloorus, he was pursued by occupants of a bakkie who allegedly fired multiple shots at his vehicle, forcing him to stop and flee on foot. The State further alleges that the report was false and that the firearm was intentionally discharged to create the impression that an attempt had been made on his life.

Mogotsi faces charges of Unlawful possession of a firearm; Unlawful possession of ammunition; Discharging a firearm in a built-up area; Defeating or obstructing the administration of justice; and Perjury.
