--A MEETING OF WINDS--

What an incredible rehearsal weekend it has been!

Musicians from the Makana Community Orchestra and DEVO Chamber Orchestra came together this weekend for an intensive and inspiring few days of music-making in preparation for A Meeting of Winds.

From the first note to the final rehearsal, the weekend was filled with energy, enthusiasm, hard work and, most importantly, a real sense of community. Bringing together musicians from across the Eastern Cape has been a wonderful reminder of the power of music to connect people, create friendships and build something truly special.

Under the direction of Johan Pretorius and Wesley Wong, our musicians have been working tirelessly to bring an exciting programme of symphonic wind music to life. There have been long rehearsals, plenty of concentration, a few challenging passages, lots of laughter — and some fantastic music!

A huge thank you to every musician who gave their time, energy and commitment this weekend. We are incredibly proud of what these two community orchestras are creating together.
And now, the countdown begins...

A Meeting of Winds is coming THIS WEEKEND!

--A MEETING OF WINDS--

We are excited to announce an exciting symphonic wind collaboration between the Makana Community Orchestra (MCO) and the DEVO Chamber Orchestra of kuGompo (East London)!

The DEVO Chamber Orchestra is a South African community orchestra made up of local musicians and music teachers. We are thrilled to join forces with another community orchestra in the Eastern Cape, bringing musicians from across the province together to share the stage in both kuGompo City and Makhanda.

Rehearsals are well underway for A Meeting of Winds, a special weekend of symphonic wind music celebrating collaboration, community, and the joy of making music together. Musicians from both orchestras will perform under the direction of conductors Johan Pretorius and Wesley Wong.

Audiences can look forward to an exciting and diverse programme of orchestral repertoire — and a wonderful celebration of community music-making in the Eastern Cape.

--EXCELLENCE IN MAKHANDA MUSIC EDUCATION--

Music doesn't just happen! It takes a village to make a concert, a rehearsal, a choir, an orchestra, or a young musician flourish.

Behind every performance are dedicated teachers who pour countless hours into nurturing talent, inspiring creativity, and building the musical heartbeat of our community. Their work often happens quietly, but its impact resonates across generations.

The Rhodes University Department of Music & Musicology is incredibly proud to honour four exceptional music educators whose contributions to music in Makhanda have been recognised with these very well-deserved teaching awards at the annual Makhanda Teaching Awards ceremony.

Congratulations to Sibusiso Mkhize, Gillian Fraser, Devon Florence, and Dr Donovan Wynne!

All four are no strangers to our department, and each is deeply woven into the musical fabric of Makhanda. Their commitment to music education extends far beyond the classroom, enriching our town through mentorship, performance, collaboration, and an unwavering dedication to developing the next generation of musicians.

Something truly special is happening in Makhanda. To see four teaching awards being presented to music teachers is a powerful reminder of the value of music education and the extraordinary people who make it possible.

We celebrate you, thank you for your dedication, and applaud this wonderful achievement. Your awards are richly deserved, and we couldn't be prouder.
