Klaas dorha
Klaas Dorha (circa 1635–1701) was a prominent 17th-century Khoi leader and historically remembered as the last captain of the Chainouqua tribe in the Western Cape of South Africa.
Historical Background
Role and Tribe: He served as a captain and leader of the Chainouqua people (a Khoekhoe group) who lived along the rivers of the Overberg and Overstrand regions.
Main Settlement: His primary kraal was located at Knoflokskraal, near present-day Grabouw and the Groenland mountains.
Resistance: Under leaders like Soeswa and later Klaas Dorha, the Chainouqua resisted the encroachment of Dutch colonial expansion, Trekboers, and free burghers from Stellenbosch into indigenous lands.
Conflict and Imprisonment: Amid political friction and local rivalries with colonial authorities under Simon van der Stel, Dorha was targeted, leading to his banishment to Robben Island for 3 years
Klaas Dorha — Chainouqua Leader
Klaas Dorha (c. 1635–1701) is remembered as a major Chainouqua Khoekhoe leader during the period when Dutch colonial expansion was rapidly moving into the interior of the Cape.
People: Chainouqua (Chainouqua/Chainouqua Khoekhoe)
Leadership: Captain/leader of the Chainouqua
Kraal: Knoflokskraal, associated with the Hottentots-Holland/Overberg mountain region near present-day Grabouw
Period: Late 17th century
Colonial counterpart: The VOC administration under Simon van der Stel
Historical significance: Resistance to colonial expansion, livestock demands, territorial encroachment and the growing occupation of Khoekhoe grazing lands.
The 1693 confrontation
One of the most significant episodes associated with Dorha occurred in 1693. Colonial records describe conflict after Dorha refused to provide livestock demanded by the Dutch East India Company. Governor Simon van der Stel authorised an armed expedition against Dorha's settlement.
The force reportedly consisted of approximately 200 soldiers and Free Burghers and was sent against Dorha's kraal.
This is important because it illustrates that the conflict was not simply a dispute between individuals. It occurred within a much larger process in which VOC authorities and colonial settlers were extending control over Khoekhoe territory, livestock and access to grazing.
Knoflokskraal
Knoflokskraal is particularly important to the Chainouqua historical narrative. Rather than presenting it merely as a place where Dorha happened to live, it can be described as a significant Chainouqua settlement associated with his leadership.
