We want to give our Gibaland community the full picture. ποΈ
In 2020, entry to Giba Gorge was R10 per car. In 2021, our neighbours changed this to R20 per person for every visitor passing through, whether they were using their facilities or not. That fee is now R50 per person.
This has directly impacted all land owners of the Gorge including our guests, staff, residents, events and businesses. People staying in our teepees, family visiting residents, staff arriving for work, and guests at our private and public events all pay just to get through the gate.
To make matters worse, our neighbours no longer charge separately for their own facilities. The boom fee now covers everything, including access to their facilities and our bike trails, removing their own admin costs while our businesses remain stuck paying for access we never agreed to.
What makes this harder to accept is that our neighbours generate hundreds of thousands of rands per month using our trails and property, and have done so for years, without fair compensation or acknowledgement to Gibaland and the other property owners. We are not the only land owners having a problem with our neighbours boom.
Despite agreements that Gibaland guests would be exempt, on Friday night a late check-in was still charged R50 per person at the gate. This is not an isolated incident.
For the record, the road into the gorge is a national road, not a private one, as the recent road upgrades confirm.
Closing our trails to our neighbours was not a decision we took lightly, but after years of this ongoing battle we felt it was the only fair response.
PLEASE NOTE: In response to the trail closure, our neighbours are currently not permitting Gibaland guests, staff, or residents through the boom. Please use the Shongweni entrance until further notice. We apologise for the inconvenience and are working to resolve this. Please use this link: maps.app.goo.gl/kNS1iAFQtSV155u9A?g_st=awb
Entry to the Gorge will be FREE from shongweni road entrance.
Gibaland is open. We are here for our community.
