Well-known George mezzo-soprano, Elisabeth Potgieter, is receiving support from the local music community following a recent severe illness that resulted in significant hearing loss. Although her condition is gradually improving, ongoing medical treatment has placed considerable financial strain on her.

Elisabeth grew up on the farm Die Bof, near George, and matriculated from Hoërskool Outeniqua. She obtained her music degree cm laude from Stellenbosch University, majoring in Singing under the renowned Prof. George van der Spuy. For many years, she has been a familiar figure in George’s music circles as a vocal teacher, performer, radio presenter, and co-organiser of lunch-hour concerts.

To assist with medical expenses, The Music Club, together with colleagues, students, and friends, will present a benefit concert on Saturday, 13 June 2026 at 16:00 in the N.G. Moederkerk, George.
Admission is free, but donations will be greatly appreciated. Donations may also be made to The Music Club: FNB Account Number: 62844303579
Reference: Elisabeth
All proceeds will be donated to Elisabeth.

The concert will feature a varied programme of vocal and instrumental music performed by acclaimed local musicians, including Carin Smit, Cuemi Tsai, Drini Botha, Eden Camerata Chamber Choir, (dir. André van Zyl), Elize Munro, Gerrit Jordaan, Gideon van der Merwe, Guido Brits, Henta Essel, Jake Pheiffer, Johan Potgieter, Leone and Kirsten Pharaoh, Margriet Venter, and Throy Petersen.
Works by composers such as Bach, Beethoven, Grieg, Lloyd-Webber, Rutter, Schubert, Schumann, and Strauss will be presented.
As Elisabeth often says: “Those who wish to sing always find a song.”

The initiative was organised by musicologist Dr. Ronell van Aswegen, founder of The Music Club Benefit Fund, which has supported talented music and dance students for nearly three decades.

Dear Friends,

Thank you for attending the farewell concert yesterday afternoon, 24 May 2026.

Your presence made the day feel complete in a way no words can describe.

I want to give special thanks to every chorister, guest musicians (Tinus, Calvin, and Karlène), pianists Anne-Marié and Fiona, masters of ceremony (Philip and Madeleine) and organisers (Paddy, Charles and St Mark's Cathedral representatives).

Thank you to those of you who traveled from far away. I know the time, cost, and effort it takes to make a journey like that. The fact that you chose to be there, despite the distance, means more than I can say.

Thank you to everyone from George and surrounds.

To our elders: thank you for blessing me with your time and support. Your steady presence reminds me of what matters, and I am grateful you were part of it.

And to those who came while not feeling 100%, managing illness or fatigue: thank you for choosing to share your strength with us, even when it wasn’t easy. Your courage did not go unnoticed.

This concert would not have been the same without each of you. I’m grateful for the conversations afterwards, the laughter, and even the tears we shared.

With sincere appreciation,
André van Zyl
