meet Skhumbuzo,the Gemsbok based artist/producer keeping Local Art alive.
Away from the spotlight,a South African Art movement is alive and well.
In the early 2015,the Lokal Art was at its peak.The BeforeCollege movement,who pioneered the streets,was droping crafts like it wasn't a thing.
Skhumbuzo,in the mead-2016,inspired a lot of rappers,most from the dusty streets of Naturena. 2017 BeforeCollege was ruined,then the movement ended. And on the surface,it looks like BeforeCollege has died with Lokal Art,"but as soon as the movement ended,all i have is Social Media."
"That was my go-to show to do what i was up to,"says Skhumbuzo,a **eGoesToJozi maker,which he films and edits himself,featuring P**e whose talent also shined during the BeforeCollege days,"we're coming with a new style of mixing a Photo Album with different edits" says P**e,that was kind of our way of letting the guys know that we can still pull out more stuff.
Skhumbuzo has been running BeforeCollege since 2015,he frequency releases artworks like it's not a thing,this year,he has released four Photo Albums and worked with countless lokal artists,and he also shoot and edit his own videos.
He recalls the day he produced his first video with Archibald(2nd member of BeforeCollege).
"I lost my mind,on top of that,i hear Archibald[who's an Idol of mine] saying 'Twalatsa this is dope'."
He says that encouraged him to share his craft with the world."What i did was i actually sent Archibald a folder full of my artwork to publish them."
Archibald believed in Skhumbuzo so much he introduced him to YoBoyFlesh,'I dont think i was ready at the time to be working with an Artist like Flesh'.
Two years after meating YoBoyFlesh,Skhumbuzo was billed to work with Flesh,"I remember Flesh would squeeze as many as rappers into his 10-minute set,which makes a lot of sense to me".
The BeforeCollege founder speaks highly of the countless artists he worked with,today when you ask him if Lokal Art is dead,his response is "Its certainly not dead lah eKasi,definitely not,because i believe FruitFull_Vee does Lokal Art,ProBeat too,so its definitely no dead,its just that there are few artists in the mainstream".
A few years ago when he still forwards his craft to BeforeCollege,he was always unhappy with the feedback,"I decided to wait until i could impress them,i started organising the guys,we started working on **eGoesToJozi,which was released in September 2018".
At the moment,its all about perfecting his craft,while waiting for BeforeCollege,he still forwards his craft to Archibald every chance he gets,Skhumbuzo's style of production is an 9,it has the intangible style that characterises BeforeCollege,he's still holding on to that BeforeCollege's mandate.For instance,in the song "Izinja Zaam" featured by the rapper Rosh,he says he's from BeforeCollege.
"I still wanna see my name at BeforeCollege,it is still a dream of mine to work with the guys,i have mad respect for them,they paved the way flawlessly,i learnt from them".
