Our Story

This movement started because of the love of dancing, moving and feeling the rhythm and beats flow through our bodies.

The three of us (Pablo, Rimichu and Glowiie) just happened to be at SP Dance studios in Goodwood. We started dancing, chatting which made us realized we had the same vision; to bring people together through dance. That’s when we decided to start a WhatsApp group so we can start sharing videos. Through the WhatsApp group, we started challenging each other to go to different locations in and around Cape Town and just dance. We started posting and sharing our videos on social media. People saw what we were doing and wanted to join the group, this is when the group started growing and we called ourselves Cape Town Freestylers. The aim of the group started shifting and instead of just sharing videos we started inviting people to meet up on weekends and during school holidays to shoot videos and dance and different locations. We wanted to use all parts of Cape Town; train stations, the gardens and other locations in and around the city to highlight the beauty of Cape Town and expose people to locations they would not necessarily go.

Pablo, myself and Glowiie started talking and realized that what we have started is a movement through dance and how can we take this a step further and enhance our purpose. Throughout 2017 there was not much activity in the movement. This changed with Open Streets. We were able to host our first official event at the Woodstock Open Street in 2017. We saw this as an opportunity to grow our movement and get our name out in communities. This gave us the idea to invite other dance movements and host a Dance Cypher of our own. Through Open Streets and our Dance Cyphers, we got over our start-up hurdle and the movement started gaining traction.

Today we go to every open street in Cape Town, we host our own Dance Cyphers and we run our own workshops in different communities in Cape Town. We want dancers to come to us, but we also want to take dancing to the communities of Cape Town. Cape Town Freestylers is creating a platform for people from different backgrounds and communities to connect with each other through something that is fun and healthy- Dance. Using technology, we draw in the younger generations, but we also believe in coming together and connecting with people face to face, in our case body to body. As people, we hold a lot of tension and emotion in our bodies. It is not always easy to express yourselves in words, dancing is one-way people can express themselves, and through the movement, people can connect and share stories through dance.
