I began Lunch Break because I wanted to understand the South African school system. As someone who grew up in the Netherlands and moved to Cape Town four years ago, I was struck by how much weight is placed on which high school a teenage learner attends.

From the very beginning, it seemed to carry a promise—a kind of guarantee for the future. That idea felt strange to me, and I found myself wondering: is it really true? Through this ongoing project, I’m trying to get closer to the core of that question.

My project "Lunch Break Confessions: The Realities of Teenage Sisterhood" is such an amazing journey.

It allows me to to capture the raw, intimate truths of human connection. These girls give me the freedom to go outside my creative comfort zone, while we laugh and joke but also talk about deeper topics like bullying, family traditions and in*******al relationships.

Step by step I start to understand more about the so diverse South African culture.

Friendship isn’t just about having fun—it’s about lifting each other up, growing together, and navigating life’s challenges side by side. Working on this project with teenage girls has opened my eyes to the strength, love, and unbreakable bonds that shape their world.

They teach me daily that true friendship is about shaping their futures with the strength of sisterhood, resilient, and being unstoppable. Grateful for the stories, the laughter, and images that we are creating.
