Amapiano Awards once again fails to take place, cancelled at 11th hour...

After two date changes, the second annual South African Amapiano Awards were scheduled to take place on Tuesday December 12, but organisers were once again left with egg on their faces when they were cancelled at the last minute.

Picture this: you got your best drip on, make-up and wig ready, fresh cut and you’re ready for what has been described as amapiano’s biggest night, but when you get to the venue, instead of flashing cameras, you are met with a sign that reads: “Amapiano Awards cancelled due to non-payment from organisers”.

I wish I could say that this was an imaginary situation, but it is sadly the unfortunate reality that some were met with.

At the last hour on Tuesday, representatives from Bathu, the awards main sponsor, messaged the media to inform them that the awards had been cancelled.

The sneaker brand partnered with the awards when they were meant to take place in April 2023 at SunBet Arena and hosted by Robot Boii. They never happened on that day, they got postponed to November, which turned into December 12.

They even announced they had sponsors on board, things looked bright. What could have happened to the venue payment?

Conversations about Zahara's royalties have become a focal point on social media and in the news since her passing on Monday.

The controversy is centred on her initial record label, TS Records, who were responsible for recording her breakthrough album, "Loliwe“.

In a series of candid discussions across various platforms, the 36-year-old singer had openly addressed the issue of being underpaid despite the commercial success of her albums.

Zahara has in the past pointed the finger at TS Records. However, DJ Sbu, associated with TS Records, is now refuting these accusations.

Speaking to “Newsroom Afrika”, DJ Sbu explained that Zahara was not working with them in the past few years.

“We made sure that she owns her own publishing, which she does with Sheer music publishing. Sheer pays her royalties directly into her bank account and they’ve done so ever since we’ve been working together.”

“And also, with our current people who distribute our music catalogue - Universal Music, we also made sure instead of Universal Music paying TS Records, that they would distribute the funds to her,” he added.

Additionally, DJ Sbu emphasised that there are documents with contracts showing the allegations made are not true. According to him, these legal documents provide evidence contradicting the allegations of underpayment

“I would never do anything to do anybody wrong. The only thing I’ve ever done in the industry is to help other people.”

“I am my own man, I know how to make my own money. I am a hard-worker. The only thing I’ve ever done was to contribute and help her succeed. The story that was out there that we were owing monies is false.”

Gungubele condemns former Postbank board members for document leaks

Communications and Digital Technologies Minister, Mondli Gungubele, has condemned some former Postbank board members for leaking confidential documents.

Gungubele has confirmed that he has removed the entire Postbank board of directors.

He says this follows a KPMG forensic investigation report that suggests that the Postbank continued to use service providers that were not lawfully contracted.

On Wednesday, three Postbank board members resigned, citing the minister’s interference.

The board members cited severity and recurring nature of bad treatment and hostility that the board has suffered at the hands of the minister and that it undermines credibility of the bank.

However, Gungubele says the action was necessary.

Man who defrauded Sars of R6.6m in VAT scam to spend 12 years in jail.

A man who claimed undue VAT refunds that resulted in revenue service Sars losing R6.6m was on Wednesday sentenced to two 12-year jail terms for VAT fraud.

The Johannesburg specialised commercial crimes court, sitting in Palm Ridge, ordered that the two terms imposed on Vusi Dlamini run concurrently.

Dlamini was the sole director of Riverly Engineering (Pty) Ltd, which was registered for VAT purposes. During May 2014 and January 2017, Dlamini submitted fraudulent VAT 201 returns to Sars through the e-filing system.

“Riverly was used by the accused to submit bogus claims for VAT refunds, while the accused was not legally entitled to claim VAT them. These fraudulent activities resulted in Sars losing R6.6m,” Sars and the NPA said in a joint statement.

Dlamini voluntarily handed himself to the Hawks in May last year.

In arguing for a harsh sentence, senior state advocate Mzuhleli Mcosini argued that the offence involved gross dishonesty.

Gauteng local division director of public prosecutions Andrew Chauke commended the “impeccable job” done by Mcosini, the police investigating officer and the Sars criminal investigator for ensuring that Dlamini faced the full might of the law.

Sars commissioner Edward Kieswetter said both Sars and the NPA, through collaborative efforts, will make it hard and costly for taxpayers who are bent to on wilfully and intentionally defrauding the fiscus.
