League of Unusual Women

Speaking of women, this wooden block tiger stamp, all the way from Goa, was gift from a man. A man who told me that if I didnt make art I would get sick. I believe him still. He had a strange relationship with women. Was our biggest cheerleader; builder of pedestals and alternative worlds. Not sure why he is on my mind at the moment... the disruptor, the advocate for the unusual.

I have been ruminating on the idea that objects have a way of choosing us long before we articulate their meaning or their purpose.

​We accumulate things on studio shelves and windowsills. A vase that vomits flowers, a shard of bone, a tiny white plastic rabbit, a pocket-sized stone kept for its obvious superiority to all other stones witnessed on that particular day, on that particular walk. 

And I'm so sure that t​here is a quiet logic to it. Psychologists talk about transitional objects and the comfort of tactile tethers. Historians discuss domestic amulets tucked into lime-plastered walls to ward off misfortune. But the maker’s impulse feels slightly different. We pull strange objects, discarded images, and raw materials toward us because they anchor us. They are tangible proof that we were paying attention.

​Looking through past work, the objects students made with me, and some of my favourite talismans, the pattern, seems to me, always the same: we make and gather the exact shapes we need to hold onto because they are of great import. And we certainly do not always have to understand why.

PSA: all the texture stamps I use are carved by hand, my cutters are custom shapes and each piece is slowly stamped, cut, cleaned and glazed by me. It’s a whole labour of love. So much love...
