DAMSEL IN DISTRESS
Standard Bank Ovation Award in 2021.
Featuring Alison Hillstead
Written/directed: Amanda Bothma
Musical Director/pianist: Nathan Johannisen
Alison Hillstead and Nahan Johannissen shine in classic cabaret style .
Griselda, aptly named after the original damsel in distress in Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, is a librarian who also lives in the library, she has not left the building in a long, long time.
When faced with the reality she opts out with “No thank you, I will rather just read my book. I might not be adventurous, but I am a librarian, and I am proud of it!”
So, Griselda becomes the ultimate armchair traveler. Through her books, she travels to Paris, New York, and Berlin in its heyday.
Accompanying her travels, Alison sings songs from Cole Porter to the show-stopping “New York- New York” and “Mein Herr”
