2026 marks the third iteration of the Junior Portrait Award, and the second time it has been open to entrants between the ages of 16 and 18 nationally.

We're pleased to announce that entries have doubled since the last competition year. Out of 232 entries, our panel of adjudicators have selected the top three, and merit award winners.

The winning piece hails from Mpumalanga this year. Congratulations to Weliswa Mdluli (18), from Uplands College, on a well deserved first place for her coloured pencil drawing on brown paper titled "Make Me Pretty".

The Junior Portrait Award Finalist exhibition can be viewed at the gallery until 11 July '26.
[Our second place, third place, and merit award winners will be shared online soon; followed by the full selection via online catalogue thereafter.]

Featured Artwork: 'Shape of You' by Austen Gordon. This beautifully illustrative floral still is one of the artworks on show as part of the 'Glimmers' group exhibition.

Glimmers are often described as the quiet counterpoint to triggers, small moments that soften the body and mind and remind us of safety, hope, rest, or connection. For many of us, a fresh bouquet of flowers has the power to brighten up even the darkest of days.

This weekend is the last chance to view Glimmers at the gallery before we start to put up our new set of exhibitions. A digital catalogue can be accessed here: https://canva.link/06qbi07y9yj69b9

If you'd like to add 'Shape of You' to your art collection, send us an email ( [email protected] ) and we'll happily assist.
