Lighting is one of the most important and difficult aspects to get right. Ideally we want it to have slightly more light than the rest of the room but without so much that it is lit up like a firefly. If it can't be near a window, then a dim light nearby can do the trick. Specifically chosen back lights and under lights can work but can often look unnatural.

This applies to its location in the room, as opposed to what it's placed near or on top of. Ideally, when it's not in the way of daily life, a sculpture will be placed in a central location, or at a turning point—at a projecting corner or where a hall turns at an angle—that way we can see it from as close to 36o degrees as possible. Smaller items are fine on shelves or mantelpieces, but preferably as close to eye-level as possible. If an items tone or colour is in particular contrast to its surroundings, then it will be fine in a corner or at ground level, providing it's also large enough and the lighting is right.

By the same token as size, moderation is key. People often choose a sculpture whose colour blends too well with its background, which means it is barely noticed. Remember, a sculpture needs to stand out; it's often a good idea to use a pedestal with a contrasting tone, or to place the sculpture near complimentary colours, e.g. green with bronze or cream with copper.

#𝟮 𝗧𝗢𝗡𝗘

While we want sculptures to invite attention, we don't want them to conflict with the tone of the surroundings. Tone can vary from age to subject to style, so if your room is mainly modern, older pieces may look out of place*; and if an item is loud in colour it may dominate a quiet room, etc. Getting the balance right can be tricky, but remember we want it to stand out subtly.

*Note: Combining old with new can sometimes work perfectly, usually when the other considerations in this list are considered.

#𝟭 𝗦𝗜𝗭𝗘

A well-balanced room will maximise space, with attention drawn to just a few objects or spread evenly across many. While it may seem obvious if a sculpture is too large for its surroundings, the most common mistake is to be on the safe side and to choose something too petite, and in doing so not allow it to truly express itself. A sculpture should stand as a focal point and break up the monotony of its environment.
