Bokani Dyer Trio – Traditions Tour

Raised in the lineage of his father, jazz musician Steve Dyer, Bokani carries the ideals of Ubuntu into his music. On Traditions, he turns inward to the sounds that shaped him — reimagining inherited material through the intimate language of the piano trio. For the first time, most of the repertoire are covers.

“I’m not trying to reinvent the wheel. I’m interested in new, novel ways of approaching the songs, leaning on the established traditions that have come before.”
The focus track, “African Piano: Inxembula,” is a traditional Xhosa folk song famously recorded by uhadi player Nofinishi Dywili and The Ngqoko Women’s Ensemble. Meaning “the ugly one,” it was also repurposed as a struggle song during apartheid. Bokani’s version moves it into a new setting of piano, bass, flute and drums — connecting generations while letting the tradition keep evolving.

Traditions is both a look into the past and a way forward.

Speech is the chapter.

21 is a journey through the senses — performances that explore how we experience, interpret and communicate through different kinds of perception.

This chapter is not the spoken word. It is conversation itself: listening, responding, questioning, pausing, and the meaning that exists between two voices.

Tomorrow, Mpumi Dhlamini shares the piano with Andile Yenana — one of his greatest musical influences — for a conversation without words.

Two pianists. Two voices. Speech translated into sound.

That is why the stage is decentralised. A single front-facing platform would turn the performance into a recital. Two pianos placed in relation to one another — angled, on the floor, with the audience seated in the hinge between them — allows the room to experience dialogue rather than presentation.

One voice states. The other answers. They pause. They overlap.

The audience is inside the sentence, not facing a speech from a distance.
