The Durban Undersea Club is looking ahead.
Our current Lot 5.6 lease is month-to-month, and there is a possibility that we could lose access to the site within the next 3 to 5 years if it is developed.

The Executive Committee has been exploring what a future development could look like, and the QS phase of the project has now been completed and approved. We are moving into the next phase: determining whether the project is financially and practically viable.

We are looking for developers, investors and DUC members with relevant experience in areas such as property development, project management, financial modelling, business planning, investment, construction and funding strategy.

You don't necessarily need to be able to do the work yourself. If you have relevant expertise, professional connections or may be interested in exploring the opportunity as a developer or investor, we would love to hear from you.

There is currently no commitment to proceed with the development. This phase is about establishing whether there is a viable way forward that protects the Club and its facilities for future generations.

It was decided to run the Spearfishing Natal Champs on Saturday morning, 22 August 2026, because there was a gap in the weather. Conditions on the North Coast were less than desirable, with nearly 2 m sets and visibility of less than 3 m. However, the guys who went south were surprised by visibility of up to 15 m and flat seas.

The winning bag came from the South Coast, with youngster Heath Houston (22.396) putting in a solid performance. In a very close second place was Sean Burns (22.278), who dived in the poor conditions on the North Coast. There was only a 118 g difference between them.

Representing the South Coast, Kurt Schrouwen (21.263) finished in third place with another solid bag. The top nine places were separated by only 3 points, showing just how close the competition was this year.

Of the 54 entrants, 26 made the weigh-in with something to present to the scale.

After the weigh-in, during the prize-giving, the West arrived strong and sent everyone rushing for their cars. We are happy to report that every participant made it home safely and without injuries just a few bruises and, unfortunately, some gear lost at sea.
