The Mandela Bay Jazz Legacy Festival 2026 opened on a remarkable note, celebrating not only the richness of South African jazz but also the legacy of those who paved the way for generations of musicians and artists.
A special highlight of the festival was the outstanding performance by the UKZN Jazz Ensemble. Their exceptional musicianship, creativity and stage presence captivated audiences and showcased the bright future of South African jazz. Their performance embodied the spirit of the festival: honouring the past while inspiring the next generation of artists.
The festival also marked the beginning of a beautiful collaboration between the Centre for Creative Arts and the Mandela Bay Jazz Legacy Festival. Representing the Centre for Creative Arts were Emerging Arts Managers Nhlakanipho Thabethe and Ayanda Chule, alongside the Centre’s coordinator. Their presence reflects a shared commitment to arts development, cultural exchange and creating meaningful opportunities within the creative sector.
This partnership signals the start of what promises to be a long and impactful relationship dedicated to uplifting jazz, nurturing emerging talent and commemorating the legends whose contributions continue to shape the South African cultural landscape.
