The photo below is from the first time I met Elliott Mkhize, probably 2000, in Durban with Marisa Fick-Jordaan. I bought those baskets from him, and you can see him holding the cash I paid for them. Great memories.

Alas, we lost a friend this week. Elliot Mkhize, one of the originators of the contemporary Zulu Telephone Wire Baskets, left us. Born in 1945, Elliot had an unique and very tightly woven style. I met him in Durban around 2000 on one of my first visits with Marisa Fick-Jordaan. Below is Elliot and me at the Santa Fe International Folk Art Market. I will post a few additional photos "now/now" as my friends in South Africa would say.

On one of my early trips to Durban, one of the lessons I learned was that, unlike many assumed in South Africa, the wire for the contemporary baskets was not "stolen", Marisa was working with wire companies to order and customize "telephone" wire into a rainbow of colors. I love this photo of the "wire vault" taken at the BAT Centre many year's ago.
