In July 2019 a group of De Rustians received an invitation from Don Jones to meet and consider starting an Art Group. There were about ten creatives at that first meeting. We chatted about our diverse creative paths, be they in Fine Art, Craft, Music and more. Even the fine art of jam-making came up. We debated the fact that, despite many of us having no formal arts training or years of professional expertise, we all had a need to express our creativity. It was agreed that creativity is soul-inspired and that our desire to express our own unique talent flows from the heart. All creative people were therefore welcome in our group. From professional, seasoned artists to aspiring inexperienced artists, all would be offered a safe, supportive space.
All present decided to work together to support one another and promote our diverse Art forms in De Rust. We would hone our skills, inspire each other, and share our creative output with the general public.
That small group of ten has now grown threefold. In 2019 the public was proudly invited to our first exhibition, launching DE RUST KREATIEF COLLECTIF Hartskuns - Art at Heart. At the start of 2020 the opportunity came up to use a vacated shop for a permanent home base, to be called ArtBeat. A range of crafts were added, given the diverse artistic skill already in De Rust. This led to our second exhibition, in March, just before the start of the covid lockdown.
Performing arts
The performing arts was seen as an important branch of the arts, both acting and music. Performances would take place against the backdrop of displayed artwork, integrating the diverse art forms. The performing arts would provide entertainment for the community, helping to make the Gallery a living, vibrant place for community fellowship. While we hope to develop talent in the performing arts, the intimacy of our gallery would encourage even the inexperienced to perform in a relaxed setting.
Community activities and outreach
ArtBeat has hosted a range of social activities, from art and craft workshops to informal get-togethers, for example simply to knit and enjoy each other’s company. Our social commitment has been adversely affected by covid restrictions, but ways have been found, lockdown levels permitting, to meet and entertain. During the strictest lockdown levels we used our WhatsApp group to start up Radio Lockdown, presenting musical and acting performances that brought us together creatively, even though physically distant. And Radio Lockdown has kept going since then, even though times may still be tough and restrictive. We look forward to less restrictive times ahed.
