Welcome to our new Committee member: Kim Watermeyer - Fine Artist and founder of ‘In The Zone’ - Art Studio.
After selling her design and print business in 2008, Kim spent the next few years travelling abroad as a volunteer. This exposed her to a wide range of intriguing experiences, such as microchipping rattlesnakes, rescuing llamas and teaching English in Mexico. When she returned home - to sort out her pension and to (reluctantly) embrace ‘adulting’, she was offered a position as a design lecturer at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, teaching drawing, painting, illustration, logo design and related creative disciplines. She quickly fell in love with her new job and after leaving CPUT, opened a home based creative arts academy. Her business ‘In The Zone’, is popular because her teaching is infused with passion and humour whilst students are quietly left to discover and develop their own authentic creative voice. Her guiding ethos in teaching and practicing art is: “There is no must in art, because art is free.” - Wassily Kandinsky. Kim’s art follows the same philosophy and she doesn’t fit it into a single recognisable style or genre. “What really excites me is the creative process, exploring and playing, experimenting, and discovering new original ways to express myself,” she says.
Kim loves her new career and considers her art sales as “the superduper, fab-tastic cherry on top!” Her artworks now hang in private homes & businesses in South Africa and around the world.
