Welcome to our new Committee member: Kim Watermeyer - Fine Artist and founder of ‘In The Zone’ - Art Studio.

After selling her design and print business in 2008, Kim spent the next few years travelling abroad as a volunteer. This exposed her to a wide range of intriguing experiences, such as microchipping rattlesnakes, rescuing llamas and teaching English in Mexico. When she returned home - to sort out her pension and to (reluctantly) embrace ‘adulting’, she was offered a position as a design lecturer at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, teaching drawing, painting, illustration, logo design and related creative disciplines. She quickly fell in love with her new job and after leaving CPUT, opened a home based creative arts academy. Her business ‘In The Zone’, is popular because her teaching is infused with passion and humour whilst students are quietly left to discover and develop their own authentic creative voice. Her guiding ethos in teaching and practicing art is: “There is no must in art, because art is free.” - Wassily Kandinsky. Kim’s art follows the same philosophy and she doesn’t fit it into a single recognisable style or genre. “What really excites me is the creative process, exploring and playing, experimenting, and discovering new original ways to express myself,” she says.
Kim loves her new career and considers her art sales as “the superduper, fab-tastic cherry on top!” Her artworks now hang in private homes & businesses in South Africa and around the world.

Our August Challenge this year was to create an art piece inspired by Kirstenbosch Gardens... but the extra challenge... make it 3D! This took a lot of our artists out of their comfort zones. All the art was amazing! And while that made it a difficult vote- these 3 artists took the prizes!
1st place: Kim Watermeyer
2nd place: Mike Baudains
3rd Place: Lyn Northam

Congratulations to you 3! They were also incredibly spoilt by our 4 sponsors. Thank you to The Deckle Edge, ArtSavingsClub, ETH Canvas and Cape Art Gallery!

Last night was our Annual General Meeting. It was well attended, and also had many people entering our August challenge (more on that in it’s own social media post!)

Our committee has grown in the last few months, which is amazing and helps our society to continue to grow from strength to strength. We are currently planning for our two Kirstenbosch Exhibitions which are coming up very soon.

The committee said goodbye to our current Chairwomen, Jo-Anne Pentz, who was welcomed as an honorary society member. So while she will no longer be leading the society, she will still continue to be a regular at our meetings.
Thank you to all the artists who attended, and thank you for your support to Constantiaberg Art Society over the last year.
