BROTHER SENTENCED TO 15 YEARS' IMPRISONMENT FOR R**E OF TWO SISTERS
A 62-year-old man has been sentenced to an effective 15 years' direct imprisonment after being convicted of repeatedly ra**ng and impregnating his two younger sisters when they were children.
The conviction was secured through the joint efforts of the Phuthaditjhaba Family, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).
According to police, the abuse began in October 1993 when both victims were just 10 years old. The accused, who was 29 years old at the time, repeatedly sexually abused his sisters over an extended period. Although the children reported the abuse to family elders, no action was taken because their parent was terminally ill.
Both sisters later became pregnant as a result of the abuse and each gave birth to a son. The two sons are now in their 30s.
One of the victims passed away in 2019. The surviving sister, now 48 years old and a qualified teacher, continues to care for both young men while receiving psychological support.
The case came to light in October 2019 when the surviving victim disclosed the abuse to healthcare professionals while receiving treatment in Pretoria. She was assisted in reporting the matter to the police, and the investigation was led by Detective Sergeant Mapitso Mofokeng of the Phuthaditjhaba FCS Unit.
On Monday, 27 July 2026, the court found the accused guilty and sentenced him to an effective 15 years' direct imprisonment.
The identity of the convicted man has not been released in order to protect the identity and privacy of the surviving victim and the children, in accordance with South African law.
