Yaaseen is probably the last person you'd expect to get angry. Soft-spoken, genuinely kind, and effortlessly funny, not in the way that people who are trying to be funny are funny, but in the way that people who just see the world differently are funny. Comedy isn't what he does. It's how he thinks. He grew up in Athlone, Cape Town, one of four kids, the only boy among three sisters. His mother gave each of her children one wall in their bedroom, theirs to do with whatever they wanted. That one detail tells you everything about the kind of home Yaaseen Barnes came from. He started writing jokes on Twitter back when Twitter only gave you 140 characters. That constraint turned out to be the best comedy training he could have asked for. From there, the Joker's Comedy Championship, Good Hope FM's Laugh Master, performing alongside Trevor Noah, a SAFTA, a Loeries, an Ovation Award at the National Arts Festival, and now Director of the Jive Funny Championship, pulling the ladder back down for everyone coming up behind him. None of it came easy. Before comedy paid the bills, Yaaseen worked call centres, Clicks, diamond grading, census clerk, whatever it took. The jokes were always there. The career took time.
Earlier this year we played brothers-in-law in a Nando's ad. So this conversation felt easy.
