Three extraordinary voices. One unforgettable meeting on African soil.

Robert Glasper, the visionary pianist and producer who has continually pushed jazz into new territory. Lalah Hathaway, the Grammy-winning soul vocalist celebrated for her rich, unmistakable voice. And Bilal, the genre-defying vocalist whose artistry moves effortlessly between jazz, soul and hip-hop.

Together, they created a rare musical encounter, three distinct artistic worlds meeting on the stage in Franschhoek, brought together through a shared language of soul, jazz, improvisation and deep musical connection.

This is the beauty and artistry of the Montreux Jazz Festival.

To witness artists of this calibre come together in Africa was something truly special. A moment that captured the spirit of Where Montreux Meets Africa.

On Sunday, the pace softened and the music took over the streets of Franschhoek. Strangers became friends. New connections were made.

A slower rhythm, a deeper connection. The Sunday Slowdown tradition was born and we can’t wait to see how the 2027 edition takes shape.

Sunlit days at the Arches Stage carried a magic of their own.

With the Franschhoek mountains standing watch and the valley bathed in golden light, artists from across South Africa and around the world soundtracked long afternoons of discovery, connection and celebration.

From Billy Monama’s Guitar Convergence, where local legends from different generations met in one electric act, to the warm sounds of Matt Hansen and the irresistible melodies of Wet Wet Wet soaring across the crowd, the Arches Stage offered something to discover with every set.

Off stage, local food vendors kept us happily fed, while the fruits of the valley filled our glasses and the crowd gathered beneath open skies to soak it all in. And this was only part of the story. Before the lights came on and the evening took over, this was where the festival breathed deeply.

There are voices that carry more than melody.

King Tha brought decades of South African musical history to the stage, a sound shaped by Xhosa rhythms, jazz, Afro-funk, mbaqanga, kwaito and gospel, and by a deep connection to the people and places that have shaped her.

But on this night, it was the live performance that spoke loudest.

Powerful, soulful and deeply rooted, her presence filled the stage with a sense of history and possibility, connecting where South African music has come from with where it continues to go.
An artist who doesn’t simply perform the music. She carries it forward.

This weekend, if there’s one thing we’re missing, it’s this.

The moments between the music. DJs setting the rhythm for the night ahead. Strangers becoming dance partners. Friends becoming family beneath the stars. Glasses raised, laughter echoing through the valley, and a dance floor that always found room for one more.

This was the pulse of Montreux Jazz Festival Franschhoek, and we can’t wait to do it all again next year.

Late nights took on a different rhythm.

For the first time, Montreux Jazz Festival came to Africa, bringing international voices together with the sounds and spirit of this continent.

As darkness settled over Franschhoek, local rhythms and global sounds met on the stages, in the crowd and across the valley. Thousands moved as one, carried by the music and the feeling of being part of something entirely new.

The first chapter was only the beginning.

After star-studded nights beneath the stage lights, Sunday invited us to slow down.

To linger a little longer, savour a few more sips of the fruits of the valley, and let the music spill into the streets. Sidewalks became stages as local legends like Albert Frost, the Nomadic Orchestra, The Rivertones, Melorie Jane Quintet, and the Major Voices Choir filled Franschhoek with sound, where strangers became dance partners and voices rose together as one.

This is just a glimpse into some of thematic that unfolded when the stage faded away and the music belonged to everyone.

Our festival spanned three unforgettable days, each with a rhythm, atmosphere and magic all its own.

The conversations between sets, glasses raised in celebration. The spontaneous dance moves, the familiar faces and new connections, and the MCs that wove the whole experience together.

These are the moments in between that gave the weekend its rhythm.

In the Jazz Village, music is never rushed. It is listened to with intention, felt in the silence between phrases, and met with the kind of reverence that jazz has always deserved. Here, every note has space to breathe, every improvisation becomes a conversation, and every performance honours the rich tradition from which the festival was born.

From deep-crate vinyl selections to soul-stirring vocals sung with closed eyes, and spellbinding instrumental passages performed with breathtaking precision, the Jazz Village is a sanctuary for those who come not only to hear the music, but to truly listen.

This Women’s Day, we celebrate the women whose artistry shaped the rhythm of our festival and whose voices continue to shape the world beyond the stage.

We honour the forces that hold us, tell our stories, and foster progress, power and equality through their artistry, courage and unwavering authenticity.

Thandiswa Mazwai, Róisín Murphy, Boohle, Moonchild Sanelly, BONJ, DJ Zinhle, Stacey Kent, Rosey Gold, Kay Faith and Msaki, and all the other vocalists and instrumentalists that made our festival what it was. To the women who create, inspire, challenge and lead, thank you for reminding us that music has always been a catalyst for connection and change.
