Remembering an icon.

Montreux Jazz Festival Franschhoek unite with the global music community in mourning the passing of Abdullah Ibrahim, a towering figure in the world of jazz and a struggle artist whose music spoke truth to power. Ibrahim passed away on 15 June 2026 at the age of 91.

Abdullah Ibrahim’s distinctive artistry saw him perform on stages around the world, including at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland in 1980, 1988 and 2006, bringing the unmistakable sound of South African jazz to the world stage.

Through his compositions and performances, he built bridges between cultures and introduced audiences around the world to the rich heritage of South African jazz.

Our condolences to his family, friends and countless admirers around the world. Abdullah Ibrahim’s contribution to South African and global music is immeasurable, and his passing marks the end of an extraordinary chapter in jazz history.

What began as a vision in the heart of the Cape Winelands became a living, breathing celebration of music, culture, and connection because of the people who showed up, filled the valley with energy, and embraced every moment together.
The crowds gathered.
The music carried.
And for one incredible weekend, Montreux met Africa in a way that felt both historic and deeply personal.
The foundation has been laid for something extraordinary.

It all started on opening night.

As the sun set over the Franschhoek Valley, thousands of people gathered to share in something special – great music, good company and the excitement of being part of a first.

From the timeless harmonies of Wet Wet Wet to the raw emotion of Matt Hansen’s performance, the Arches Stage set the tone for a memorable weekend.

Then the energy shifted. DJ Kent had the crowd moving, before Róisín Murphy brought the night to a spectacular close with a performance that was bold, captivating and unforgettable.

Local talent shared the stage with international artists. New friendships were formed. Old favourites were rediscovered. And everyone moved to the same rhythm.

From world-class performances to the energy moving through the crowd, this was more than a festival weekend, it was the moment Montreux met Africa, and something truly special happened.

People came together through sound, celebration, and shared experience, turning Franschhoek into a space alive with rhythm, connection, and unforgettable performances we won’t soon forget.

Historic first at Montreux Jazz Festival Franschhoek

In a series of historic firsts, 16-year-old Pano Couloubis quietly made Montreux Jazz Festival history, becoming the youngest bouzouki player (a long-necked Greek string instrument known for its bright, resonant tone) to ever perform at the festival’s global stage, appearing at its inaugural African edition in Franschhoek’s Jazz Village.

Joining Kesivan and The Lights, he stepped into the heart of the Jazz Village lineup alongside leading international and African artists. His original self-composed bouzouki solo, set within a piece inspired by Hans Zimmer’s Inception soundtrack, pushed the instrument into a cinematic space that was precise, emotive, and strikingly contemporary.

A debut defined by a series of firsts, and a moment that set its own precedent.

A student at SAHETI School, Pano began playing the bouzouki at age seven and has already built a reputation both locally and internationally.

Mandisi Dyantyis, as seen through the lens of Trevor Stuurman and the Manor team.

His music moved like a hymn, rooted in jazz, carried by the spirit of gospel, and guided by something deeply ancestral. Each note felt intentional, each pause filled with meaning, his trumpet and voice drew us into a space that feels both personal and collective.

And on 27 March, he held Montreux Jazz Festival Franschhoek in the palm of his hand.

From our performers’ kinetic energy to MCs keeping the energy high, to selectors moving the crowd, the festival unfolded through motion, music, and momentum.

It was the people who shaped the pulse in real time, from every incredible performer in our lineup to the sound engineers refining every note and the teams behind the scenes building the framework for it all to come alive.

A thousand moving parts, one seamless experience — where every element found its place, and the music led the way.
