Montreux Jazz Festival Franschhoek unite with the global music community in mourning the passing of Abdullah Ibrahim, a towering figure in the world of jazz and a struggle artist whose music spoke truth to power. Ibrahim passed away on 15 June 2026 at the age of 91.
Abdullah Ibrahim’s distinctive artistry saw him perform on stages around the world, including at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland in 1980, 1988 and 2006, bringing the unmistakable sound of South African jazz to the world stage.
Through his compositions and performances, he built bridges between cultures and introduced audiences around the world to the rich heritage of South African jazz.
