A range of hand-woven baskets, each that differ in pattern and shape, from the Omba Arts Trust.
These beautiful collecting baskets of the Khwe San people of northern Namibia, traditionally used for collecting wild fruits, nuts and edible tubers, are of a nearly extinct style that was revived in recent years.

The Omba Arts is a not-for-profit social enterprise that has been supporting the sustainable livelihoods of hundreds of artisans and artists, living in rural communities in Namibia, for over 30 years. We develop and market some of Namibia’s most iconic handicrafts as well as San contemporary art.

Beautiful new work from Mary Visser is up now at the gallery.

“I draw on a combination of mediated images of landscapes, and manipulate these in order to setup chance encounters between images and non-images. It is in this circulatory shift between the abstract and the representational that I hope to enforce the surface and canvas edge, assert the painted mark and attempt to make tangible the object-ness of the painting.” - Mary Visser

Art-I-San textiles - playful images produced from Lino cuts and oil paintings printed on a numbers of fabric weights.

"Art and craft intervention is one way of helping the San culture to survive in a transitional world, and to develop trading links. From the results of other San art and craft projects, art and craft has not only empowered individuals, but has been an effective way of reaching a broader audience. It promotes the voice of the San and it is a visual window into their culture, which is rapidly disappearing." Cheryl Rumbak

We sell meterage and have a product range that includes cushion covers, table linen and bags. Royalties for meterage printed is paid to the artist whose images have been used.
Art-I-San textiles are manufactured and printed in Cape Town, so a truly South African product.

Cry me a river, by Luan Nel
Oil on canvas 760x610mm

“I have been painting and drawing ever since I can remember. My subjects vary, I have a fascination with the transient and the poetic potential of any subject I portray. This in combination with the title becomes the field within which I allow myself the freedom to make something that communicates on some personal or emotional level with the viewer and the world around me. Often my subjects are connected to memory, both personal and collective memory.” - Luan Nel

Platters, plates & vases

“I build my pieces by hand, coiling and pinching the clay as well as using slab moulds for the plates and platters. Hand building, I think adds vitality and charm to the work and gives each piece its own individual , unique character.” - Lisa Ringwood

A selection of hand embroidered cushions from the incredible Kieskamma Art Project in the Eastern Cape is now available at the gallery.

The Keiskamma Art Project in the Eastern Cape town of Hamburg has helped bring hope and confidence to a group of rural women living in an area plagued by high levels of unemployment. They use their embroidery skills to create tapestries that tell stories reflecting their culture and history.

The tapestries and embroidered works have become highly collectible artworks and have been exhibited all over the world. They have won numerous local and international awards.

New work by Mary Visser
Beautiful printed cushion covers by Fabric Nation
And ceramics by leora Lewis

“I see the painting not as a window looking out, but rather as a container in which I can freely arrange and rearrange things.
In the studio I seek to set up a dialogue between myself and the canvas. As if I’m meeting a new person. Like a conversation of sorts. I start with no preconceived plan. Sometimes this goes well and the exchange is cheerful, often times it goes in unexpected directions and can get quite uncomfortable and even look embarrassing. I think ‘oooh yuck, ok great.’ This gets me excited to try a new tack, usually something risky in order to salvage the painting.” - Mary Visser

Lovely to be exhibiting at Kalk Bay Modern in the annual Art on Paper XIII - go find my woodblock print “Study of the yellow rocks in summer”.
Always brilliant to be included in the annual Art on Paper show at Kalk Bay Modern - this one is Art on Paper XIII and runs from Saturday 7 May.

Fitting as it’s also Print Day In May - a worldwide fine art printmaking day when printmakers the world over will be loving that sticky sound of paper being pulled by hand off an inky surface!

Y’know - when you decide to do what you love, everything falls into place. As if by magic. Because...we’re MAGIC 💖 It’s been two super cool days propvol next level 💫 Yesterday while teaching in Masiphumelele I noticed a glass sculptural piece with (drum roll) the Great Wall of China in it. No one knows where it came from or why it’s there. I leave for my Big Adventure tomorrow 🇨🇳 Then I bumped into a beloved colleague from days and remembered all the good seeds planted and watered by our blood sweat & tears. Today it’s been one marvellous encounter after the next. Finished learning my 👏🏾 Then had a lovely farewell brunch at The Courtyard Café with my beloved followed by The Best conversation with Kalk Bay Modern ‘s lovely dude. Then bang, bumped into phenomenal Thola Antamu and on my Farewell-for-now stroll I encountered Anadi - a Buddhist who has travelled the world and at 72 is on his way to Fiji. Inspiration. The day started with my mom wishing me days that make me fall in love with living ✅ Oh and I just received another fab email from who rocks like no one else 🤩
