Introducing our Art & Wellness Experiences | 01/05 🌿

Atlantic Seaboard: Kayaking with Seals & Dolphins or Healing with Horses

What if a day of art and culture could also be an opportunity to slow down, reconnect and reset?

Spend a day immersed in the natural beauty of the Cape Peninsula, paddling alongside the seals of Duiker Island in Hout Bay or finding stillness through an equine-assisted experience at Riverside Terrace.

The day unfolds with gallery visits, tea at Deli Social, lunch at Delish, and an intimate studio visit with one of the Cape’s celebrated artists: Kate Gottgens, Georgina Gratrix or Robert Slingsby. As the afternoon draws to a close, take the scenic route home over Chapman’s Peak.

Each of our five bespoke Art & Wellness experiences brings together nature, art and mindful encounters, thoughtfully curated to offer a different way of experiencing the Cape.

Curated for rest. Designed for change.

We recently attended the opening of Aarde Art Space, a new contemporary gallery situated in the historic Old Castle Brewery, and its inaugural exhibition, Roots.

Bringing together the work of nine artists, the exhibition marks an exciting new chapter for the Old Castle Brewery as a space for contemporary art, while introducing Aarde Art Space as a new voice within Cape Town’s growing gallery landscape.

We’re excited to see how this new space develops and to follow the programme ahead

MANIFESTO | NIGEL MULLINS

In Manifesto, Nigel Mullins turns painting into a conversation with art history - drawing on the manifestoes, ideas and contradictions of Modern and contemporary art.

Moving between figuration and abstraction, Mullins layers sumptuous impasto, slogans and fragments into works that reflect the turbulence and restlessness of our time.

Referencing artists including Joseph Beuys, Cindy Sherman and Ai Weiwei, he considers the manifesto as both a declaration of intent and a kind of talisman: an attempt to shape the future and make sense of the present.

Imagining viewers in 2226, Mullins’s paintings become messages across time - asking what our era, with its anxieties, politics and aspirations, might leave behind.

TRANSLUCENT WORLDS — Karel Nel at Everard Read

We recently joined Karel Nel for an artist-led walkabout of Translucent Worlds.

Drawing on journeys through Japan and Europe, as well as encounters with artists, writers and places, Nel layers memory and experience into intricate works that shift between real and imagined landscapes.

From Bashō and Hokusai to Brancusi and Gauguin, references stretch across time and geography, creating a fascinating presentation on how we see, remember and reinterpret the world around us.

“My work has blossomed from the time I took the plunge to devote all my time to it after long, though unconscious, preparation. I am grateful and think that a late flowering could be better than an early one and any flowering better than no flowers at all.”
