Rachels sacrifice.
The story of Rachel has always been one of my favourites as a child and the image of her delicate body lying frozen on the cold earth has always haunted me since the first time my father told me the story. As a figurative painter the theme allows the artist to explore a narrative in the context of the human body which I found an interesting challenge. I have moved the scene away from the historical context, placing her body leaning against the anthill with her clothes slightly visible beneath her to create a reference to the story. She lies on a barren piece of land devoid of any life, giving the viewer a sense of death to follow. Her body glows in contrast to the dark surroundings, giving her body a sacred quality as it is this body which has saved her brother from death. She lies facing toward the heavens giving out her last breath. I have placed her in this pose to give some reference to painting prototypes such as the sacrifice of Isaac or the deposition of Christ. Both "types" using the body stripped of clothes to represent a pure sacrifice.
