Artvark Gallery

Artvark Gallery Contemporary Art Gallery & Restaurant. The idea behind Artvark began in 1991 in Johannesburg. Everyone who visits Artvark leaves inspired and uplifted.

The core of the “company” was the handmade cutlery initiated by Theresa Jo - an artist with a Fine Art degree majoring in jewellery at the University of Stellenbosch and CP Wessels, a designer, previously a Film maker and student of Architecture at the University of Natal. Relocating to Kalk Bay took place in 1998 where Artvark Gallery and a manufacturing studio in Retreat were established. Artva

Blending songs from her upcoming EP with stories from her debut novel, Speak the Truth and Run, this 60 minute music & storytelling performance tells the story of a white orphan adopted by a Black family in Soweto shortly after South Africa's first democratic elections.

Tanika Paschke-Moloi is a writer, musician, and multidisciplinary artist working at the intersection of storytelling, performance, and social impact. She is the founder of Hatua Kali, a creative studio and social impact organisation that uses storytelling as a tool for connection, healing, and collective understanding.

Her work draws from a deeply personal and complex upbringing—shaped by contrasting belief systems and lived realities—which continues to inform her exploration of identity, belonging, and the question: what does it mean to be free?

Blending music, narrative, and research, her performances create intimate, reflective experiences that invite audiences into emotional and intellectual engagement. Whether through live shows, writing, or collaborative projects, Tanika’s work seeks to dissolve separation and foster a deeper sense of connection—to self, to others, and to the environments we inhabit.

Thresholds – into liminal space, crossing from one life to another.
This sculpture by Di Smith, speaks of displacement—the force that compels so many people to leave behind everything familiar and journey into uncertainty. Migration is rarely a free choice; it is usually a means of survival. When
home becomes untenable—when violence shatters safety, when tyranny crushes freedom, when hunger becomes starvation, when faith becomes a crime—people hopefully carry what they can and move toward the possibility of a safer tomorrow. The figures here represent that paradox of human resilience: the extraordinary courage required to take each
step away from what was known, driven by something stronger than fear of the unknown. It is the instinct to preserve life, to protect loved ones, to seek dignity. They move because staying would mean erasure.
They move because hope, however fragile, still outweighs despair.

Gill Allderman is a contemporary artist working primarily in mixed media, exploring themes of movement, history, and belonging.
Her work is created in series, each unfolding a narrative through texture, colour, and structure
Gill has exhibited locally and internationally, her works reflect a balance between concept, abstraction, and storytelling, always searching for meaning in the spaces we cross and inhabit.

The works presented from Where Strangers Meet in Water interrogate the ocean as a contested space of passage, foregrounding the precarious conditions under which bodies traverse it. Through the recurring motif of the boat and the use of repeated, tally-like marks, Allderman invokes temporal systems associated with waiting, counting, and survival—gestures that allude to experiences of confinement, migration, and crisis.

The smaller works extend this inquiry through the physical extraction of paint from the surface, where absence becomes a generative device. Here, subtraction operates as both formal strategy and conceptual register, indexing loss, displacement, and the instability of presence.

Artvark welcomes
BRETT WILLIAMS.

Brett's practice explores the relationship between
emotional states and constructed environments, using landscape as a site where memory, loss, and introspection converge.
His work examines emotional
endurance through themes of grief, heartache, envy, and the tenderness that follows loss.
Abandoned pools and emptied landscapes serve as metaphors for psychological states, suggesting spaces once
animated but now suspended in liminality.

Layers are applied and reworked, allowing traces of earlier gestures to remain visible. These accumulated
marks form a kind of emotional sediment, recording
shifts in thought and feeling over time. Imperfection
becomes part of the structure, much like memory, which never settles into one fixed image.

"Eclipse' sits firmly within Brett Williams' exploration of
"emotional landscapes," where external environments mirror interior states. The towering, eroded structures evoke both progress and ruin; the interplay between human ambition and inevitable decay through hubris,
focusing suggests a world shaped-and undone by its
own making.
