Artvark Gallery

Artvark Gallery Contemporary Art Gallery. The idea behind Artvark began in 1991 in Johannesburg. The core of the “company” was the handmade cutlery initiated by Theresa Jo - an artist with a Fine Art degree majoring in jewellery at the University of Stellenbosch and CP Wessels, a designer, previously a Film maker and student of Architecture at the University of Natal.

Relocating to Kalk Bay took place in 1998 where Artvark Gallery and a manufacturing studio in Retreat were established. Artvark Gallery is classic and contemporary with a keen eye for folk art, specializing in paintings, drawings, prints, ceramics, textiles, jewellery, craft and unique custom made steel works. It has been a long time favourite of Cape Town art lovers and tourists visiting Kalk B

workshops throughout South Africa and
Namibia via the organization, and still
teaches sporadically from her studio.

Her vision as an artist has always

Artvark Gallery co-owner Theresa Jo 's
3-dimensional sculpture design, 'Andries Die Denker' at his new home in Houtbay.
Manufactured by the other co- owner husband CP Wessels. Andries does not only stare into the distance, he is always in deep thought.
The concept for the design is simple: a folded bench and a figure consisting of three planes. The simplicity of the design induces peacefulness and tranquility.
His contemplative nature invites companionship and
confessions!

Galvanized mild steel.

The story behind this print “ Flipside” by Theresa Jo.
Theresa explains -
"When you want to write on an etching the letters have to be the ‘wrong way round’ as it is going to be printed. “ I have written poems in this manner and short words like Simonstown, Kalkbay reef is a breeze for me - this writing from right to left. I did the little etching , easy peazy, but when pulling the first print I realized that I had forgotten to turn False Bay around as well! Therefore the name “Flipside”!
.
This print is available at Artvark Gallery.

Phosphorescence in Lockdown.
Monoprint etching with silverleaf on Fabriano
2021
1/1

"Phosphorescence" is defined as the process in which energy absorbed by a substance is
released relatively slowly in the form of light.

This otherworldly phenomenon is a rare sighting for those who are privileged to
witness it. It's appearance on waves near the shore is caused by the emission of
bioluminescence during certain specific conditions by algae blooms when disturbed.
This etching was inspired by the sudden appearance of the glimmer of phosphoresence
on the waves one night during Lockdown last
year.

Lockdown Waves.
2021
Monoprint etching on Fabriano.
1/1.
.
Waves have often in art and mythology symbolised the unconscious, the unknown and opportunity.
This etching was inspired by the ritualistic, nightly observation of the waves off the coast of the Western Cape during the commencement of Lockdown last year, serving as a metaphor for stability, certainty and order. The rythmic forces of the natural world follow their own eternal laws as humans gaze on.

Herman van Nazareth (pseudonym for Herman Van Aerde) is an internationally renowned and
highly awarded Belgian Postwar and contemporary artist who made his home in South Africa some 50 years ago. After studying Fine art at the Royal Academy of Ghent, van Nazareth moved to Cape Town in 1965 where he studied further at Michaelis School of Fine Arts.
His oeuvre, paintings, and sculpture seem to largely express an existential sense of isolation, whether it is in the shape of the primordial human gesture, his faceless portraits, or hauntingly floating landscapes.
In 2008 Nazareth was chosen as the artist for the Beijing Olympic Games.
Because of his aversion to the abuse of power and inhumanity, as well as his strong stance against supremacy, Van Nazareth was one of the very first artists to be called a protest or satirical artist in South Africa in the late 1960's. Herman van Nazareth has enjoyed a highly successful international career but has always remained loyal to South Africa. He has received several awards, and his work is represented in important collections worldwide.

Prices are on request.
