Melanie Meyer Artist

Melanie Meyer Artist South African artist and facilitator working across painting, sculpture, and image-making. Process-led, rooted in presence and what wants to emerge. undisturbed.

Melanie (I) was born in Cape Town in 1968 and grew up on a small holding in Somerset West. I spent much of my childhood in nature, discovering and creating fantasy worlds. Even as a young child I remember taking my father’s paints and pastels, and finding a secret place in the garden to draw and to paint …. Now as an adult, I spend many weeks away from the noise of the city, exploring the landscap

es and wildernesses of Southern Africa with my family. And it is nature that inspires my art and photography. Of course I love to observe the wildlife inhabiting our urban and residential areas too. One of my artistic objectives is to show people how much wildlife actually exists within our city.

Poetry of Stillness

A collection of miniature seascapes in oil on 12 x 12 cm stretched canvas.

I fill these small frames with brisk brushwork and palette knife textures, capturing the intense, atmospheric moods of coastal light and shadow.

The works evoke a sense of space, stillness, and emotional presence, arranged in geometric collage. My process-led, intuitive style often reveals themes that emerge unexpectedly, and I am always curious to discover what surfaces through the creative process.

It was the worst flood in 100 years.

The rain began in distant mountains, water gathered over time, and the force was already building before the outcome was visible. What was already gathering.

I am happy to share that our family is safe and our special house remains standing (mostly).

Returning to the river to assess the damage and begin cleaning, I was struck by the resilience of our friends and neighbors along the Breede River valley as the community soldiers on through hardship and devastation with a calm strength. So many precious memories and items, stripped away by a wall of water.

But nature and life returns, small tracks and delicate spiderwebs, a storm cloud silver-lining.

New work and new inspiration.

Some paintings finish, some wait.
Years later they ask for something more.
My work grows alongside me.

Sharing the creative process is a precious gift. Here are some beautiful moments from my week at the Calitzdorp Art Festival.

My upcoming art process retreat, Permission to Pause, still has slots available - a quiet, held space for those who feel more at home away from the noise. It will be a 5-day facilitated retreat, focused on process-led art-making, deep listening, and creative exploration, scheduled for September 2026. Follow the link for more.
