Thrum Room Dub Techno Concept Night & Podcast Series Watch this space for more info on events, podcasts and other notable Dub Techno related topics ..

The idea behind Thrum Room was conceived and executed in December 2012 by Helmut J & Robin Would who decided to make something corporeal of their love and passion for the dubbier side of House and Techno. Thus the Dub Techno concept night (Thrum Room) and podcast series (Thrumcast) was born.

“Dub Techno :

Wikipedia describes it as :

“Songs of this genre can typically be identified by heavy use

of delay and reverb applied to minor chords, structured around a minimal techno drum track”

We prefer Silent Season’s description :

“…that sound of being in the forest, away from the actual party but hearing the way it echoes…”

As a concept night, Thrum Room brings to you the very finest Deep, Ambient and Dub Techno artists Cape Town has to offer, exploring a (sub)-genre much lacking in the night life of Cape Town & well worth exploring. As a podcast series, we explore within and beyond our coastlines to showcase this admittedly monotonous, yet incredibly diverse sound.

Our Thrumcast series continues, with much gratitude to Durbanite Leo Janssen aka Dr Nonono, keyboardist and didge player for successful Durban band THC, and his consistently outstanding NONONO events.

He has this to say about his contribution :

"As a DJ, I really enjoy pulling back on the tempo of the DJ before me, and then subtly upping the tempo as for the rest of the set. I find this clearing of the air allows one to define one's sound. Here we begin around 95bpm, and march onwards towards 142bpm. The first half of the mix meanders a bit, gently accumulating, mingling dub techno with some cosmic deepness, until things get more serious around the half way mark. I've also included an Underworld track in there, to pay homeage to a band that had a huge influence on me when I first started losing my head to electronic music in the early 90's. From there on out it's unashamed escalation! May you find joy in this."

Thrumcast 028 by new kid on the block Megan Jane. In just over a year she's won many hearts and attainted the illest of residencies and gigs in Cape Town, where she resides and performs.

The thing that strikes everyone the most about her is the ability to weave and cross genre boundaries that seem near impossible. Her love for the dub sound is also rather recent, but even that she's made swift work of understanding and using it in her rather intellectually challenging dj sets, and has already opened for one of our recent Thrum Room events.

Enjoy this here our first offering by the fairer of the sexes, and perfect for the end of this tumultuous year for most, whether you're driving towards a holiday destination, chilling and blazing up at home, or still on the grind.

The event on Wednesday night was absolutely fantastic. Thanks to Craig Shacid and Richard Marshall for their near perfect sets and understanding the sound properly. And of course thanks to the properly open minded dancers, Patrick Rubuz and the rest of the very efficient staff. See you all next month.

Long time progressive house enthusiast and, of more recent, a strong believer in the slow house movement. Ramon Garnier is to "underground music" as "underground music" is to Progressive House... one in the same.

With one foot deep in the true influences and origin of electronic music, and the other in a modern sound directly related to its roots, Ramon brings to the fore a sound that oozes quality, progression, nostalgia and energy.

Catch him blending his usual sound combined with a dubbier influence at 22:00 this Saturday night.
