The Nature of nature
A group Exhibition, featuring paintings by Hilary Iwanski, Robert Koch and Peter van Straten, opened at The Cape Gallery on Sunday the 4th of May. A big thank you to all who joined us for the opening.

‘Art is complete when it is human. It is human
Once the looped pigments, the pin-beads of light
Securing space under their deft restrictions
Convince, as the index of a possible passion,
As the adequate gauge, both of the passion
And its object. The artist lies
For the improvement of truth. Believe him (her).’

An excerpt from ‘A meditation on John Constable’ Charles Tomlinson

The exhibition will we running until the 31st of May.

Non-existent just moments before
One that you're suddenly part of
The Moment you open that door"

Hilary Iwanski

Robert Koch
"The Bather", captures a quiet morning scene viewed from the Brass Bell restaurant, looking northeast toward Muizenberg. Typically, Robert approaches composition a bit differently than in this painting. The horizon line created by the Kalk Bay mountain escarpment and the railway lines adds depth, even though it guides the eye away from the focal point—the bather.

To counterbalance the shoreline and buildings, he used massed forms and focused on values to emphasize the soft interplay of early morning light through the mist. The result is a calm, serene landscape that subtly tells a story of nature and everyday life in Kalk Bay.

Boyce Magandela – Solo Exhibition at The Cape Gallery opens 3 April https://mapmyway.co.za/boyce-magandela-solo-exhibition-at-the-cape-gallery-opens-3-april

Boyce Magandela is a deft draftsman, an artist who can infuse life in his subject. He has his own, unique approach to the art of embroidery, sketching with stitches in brightly colored threads.

Recently he visited the Keiskama Art Project in the Northern Cape, where a group of artisans live who are famous for their tapestries that tell the stories of Africa. His tapestries/thread/ paintings have become increasingly rich in texture and display greater creative freedom since his immersive experience with the Keiskama Art Project. [Keiskama Art is an exhibition on view accross the road at the AVA Gallery until 16 April]

In Boyce Magandela’s words:

“But now, with these works, I decided to work with men on blanket. There are many types of blankets that are used in our culture as a symbol of reaching another stage of life meaning, from being a boy to be a man and I’m trying to show the challenges men go through.
The check blanket is given by the elders when they welcome a new man as one of them. With this body of works I’m putting my experience and the journey of being a man.”

Blankets play a significant role in African culture. The Basotho blanket, for example. is ‘wrapped in history’. Sanlam curated an exhibition ‘Sutha Ke Fete’ meaning ‘Make way so I may pass’ highlighting the symbolic meaning of the Basotho blanket exploring its role in Lesotho’s national identity and contemporary cultural practices.

The fact that these woolen blankets are worn has influenced the modern S A fashion industry. Boyce occasionally uses the traditional blankets as canvas for his stitched narratives, but generally chooses the checked fabric, Symbols and metaphors are apparent in his use and application of the patterned ground.

Lucky enough to have had a sneak preview of the work by Boyce Magandela and hugely intrigued and impressed by both the richness of the texture and the imagery. LOTS to see and enjoy!

The Cape Gallery Summer Review Group Exhibition NOW ON https://mapmyway.co.za/the-cape-gallery-summer-review-group-exhibition-now-on

The Cape Gallery Summer Review is a group exhibition, that will be on show till the 29th March - so please hurry over and enjoy soonest.

"Cape Summers are an exhilarating experience; the sunshine beckons and there is much to explore and enjoy", comments gallery owner, Gail Dorje.

"Our culturally diverse heritage is evident in the regional art and architecture. It can often be found in unexpected places, those that are reminiscent of a past lifestyles evident in John Kramer’s paintings of corner café’s or Vanessa Berline’s evocations of circus episodes that she paints on gold leaf or David Thorpe’s literary reference to Mervyn Peake’s Gormenghast trilogy in his painting of Gertrude."

John Kramer is an artist with a formidable memory who has an impressive archive of photographs he has taken of the cafés, general dealer’s shops, hairdressing salons and haberdasheries. This resource enables him to recreate the façade of a building as it was in the 50’s, 60’s 70’s or 80’s in his inimitable photorealistic style. When asked why he chose to paint ‘The Pardon Café, Worcester, he recalled a time when it was known as Omar Valley’s café, where he, as a child, could buy fruit, vegetables, the occasional coconut, Simba chips, big bags of peanuts as well as cool drinks and comics. Today the building that once housed Omar Valley’s café still stands devoid of colour and signage. John Kramer has painted the café as it was in the ’80s, appropriately named the ‘Pardon Café as it stands adjacent to Church Square and the police station at the corner of Adderley Street and High Street in the sleepy town of Worcester.

Frederike Stokhuyzen
A solo Exhibition, opened at The Cape Gallery on Sunday the 16th of February. A big thank you to all who joined us for the opening.

While Frederike Stokhuyzen has an easy rapport with her friends and her family who clearly love her and admire her work, she willingly spends long hours in her Camps Bay studio Bay painting. There she can draw on a large resource of pen and wash sketches she completed by the roadside when travelling through South Africa or abroad.

The exhibition will we running until the 8th of March.
