Discover the full Strauss & Co presentation at FynArts Festival Hermanus 2026 | 6 – 14 June

In a new initiative and for the first time a live broadcast by Fine Music Radio celebrating the arts from the Hermanus FynArts Festival is made possible courtesy of Strauss & Co.

A focal point of Strauss & Co’s’ participation this year is a museum quality exhibition titled “Time and Tide: Expressions of Hermanus and the Coastal Overberg” to be shown at the FynArts Gallery. Curated by Strauss & Co art specialists, the exhibition will highlight local art heritage and emerging talent from Hermanus and nearby areas.

A talk by Ian Hunter, senior art specialist and regional representative – Mossel Bay to Gqeberha – will give further insight into the exhibition. Ian will share his passion and extensive knowledge of the artists and history of the region.
As in previous years Strauss & Co will again host a valuation day for clients in the area.

Against the background of Strauss & Co’s online auction Eastern Cape Echoes: Storms River to Port St Johns, Art Club Cape Town hosts the panel discussion, Scratching the Surface: An evolution of the Eastern Cape landscape, seen through the lens of its best-known artists.

The discussion is facilitated by Jo Voysey (Art Education Specialist), bringing together Ian Hunter (Senior Art Specialist) and Christopher Till (Museum Director and Curator) to trace the aesthetic lineage of the Grahamstown Group (or Eastern Cape artists) and their fundamental engagement with the painted surface.

They will touch on the influence of Brian Bradshaw, whose arrival at Rhodes University sparked a departure from traditional representation. Under his instruction, the young artists began to explore the physicality of the painted surface, treating the canvas as a site of material experimentation. This radical (for the time) approach moved the artists to develop their individual visual languages that continued to evolve over time.

The viewing is curated by world renowned interiors and furniture designer, Justin van Breda.

In 1994, William Kentridge directed the music video for Another Country, the title song from popular musical ensemble Mango Groove’s third album. Billboard praised the album’s title song as ‘one of the most beautiful songs to emerge from the transition to democracy’.

The music video was produced in Kentridge’s signature stop-motion style; however, it differs from his career-defining films in that it features a live actor. Mango Groove’s lead singer, Claire Johnston, is the only member of the band who appears in the video, which is set in Kentridge’s abstracted and tumultuous Johannesburg. While poignant images of a violent past flash across billboards and drive-in screens, there is also a promise of clarity and renewal in the video’s clear, starry skies and cleansing rains.

Three decades later, this drawing from Another Country is a valuable document of creative collaboration during a fraught political time and the defiant spirit of hope the song held as South Africa awaited its first democratic elections in 1994.

Textile art has long been dismissed as a female pastime. In the hand woven tapestries of Malawian artist Billie Zangewa, practice turns that dismissal into power. By using fabric and sewing, Zangewa explores identity, domesticity, motherhood and the radical, persistent force of self-love.

Friday Afternoon in Notting Hill, featured on our Evening Sale live auction, is characteristic of her most celebrated work. This intimate and luminous scene of urban life in London, rendered in silk, is where the personal and the political collide in a subtle tableaux of social interaction and belonging.

Zangewa’s work is currently featured in In Minor Keys, the main exhibition of the 61st Venice Biennale.

Discover a century of living and a lifetime of looking through the collection of Dr Vera Dubin.

At seven years old, Vera Dubin wrote to South African artist Hugo Naudé asking to buy one of his paintings with money she had raised from her classmates, to brighten their classroom. It was the first act of a lifetime devoted to art.

Nearly a century later, the collection she built with dedication and an unerring eye closes today, Monday 25 May 2026 from 2pm online. The offering includes impeccable René Lalique glass made before 1945 (when the René Lalique himself still oversaw every piece leaving his atelier), finely worked European silver, and European and South African paintings and works on paper.

In 1974, two artists looked at the same man and saw something entirely different. This is Walter Battiss, seen and self-seen.

Jean Welz, the Austrian-born modernist and lifelong friend, created a portrait of Walter Battiss as he knew him with the quiet intimacy of someone who had shared meals, conversations, time, and a deep mutual regard for the act of making art.

That same year, Battiss turned the brush on himself to create this phenomenal self-portrait, a work that is at once confrontational and exceptionally detailed. He signed it not with his own name, but as Alpha Batt 155, presenting a riddle and provocation on the legacy of language and the artist’s own career.

Swipe to explore both portraits and the remarkable story they tell together.

Self-Portrait Alpha Batt 155 by Walter Battiss is on offer at the Evening Sale: Modern and Contemporary Art. Portrait of Walter Battiss by Jean Welz is on offer at Deep Roots: Selected Works from Stephan and Carmen Welz.
