Cape Town Camerata

Cape Town Camerata Delivering moving musical experiences to our audiences, at home in South Africa and abroad, since ‘97

This choir was founded in 1997, under the name Pro Cantu Youth Choir and underwent a name change in 2012 to the Cape Town Youth Choir, a city-based choir for young singers. After celebrating the 25th anniversary of the choir's existence and to mark a point of musical evolution, the choir has adopted a new name - Cape Town Camerata. Our mission remains the same: to provide an opportunity for excell

ent choral singers residing in the Cape Peninsula to sing in a choir of the highest international standards while delivering a moving musical experience to its audiences. We are based in the Cape Town City Centre and currently rehearse twice a week. Membership is by audition only and is open to anyone who considers themselves to be lovers of choral music and all things choir.

The Blessing - by Kari Jobe and Cody Carnes
Choral Arrangement by Leon Starker
Sung in English and Afrikaans
Performed by Cape Town Camerata
Endler Hall, Stellenbosch
Conducted by Leon Starker

"The Blessing" is a widely popular 2020 contemporary worship song by Kari Jobe, Cody Carnes, and Elevation Worship,. Based on Numbers 6:24-26, it is a sung prayer designed to declare God's favor and peace over families and future generations. Released during the pandemic, it quickly gained global popularity.

Written in a 12-hour session on February 27, 2020, by Kari Jobe, Cody Carnes, Steven Furtick, and Chris Brown, just before it was recorded live at Elevation Church. The lyrics are largely a direct musical adaptation of the "Priestly Blessing" from Numbers 6:22-27. It focuses on God's character, peace (Shalom), and favor. The song won the 2020 Dove Award for Worship Recorded Song of the Year. The song has seen many cover versions worldwide, particularly from churches in the UK, Europe, and elsewhere. The song is intended to bring comfort and peace during seasons of fear and uncertainty

The Lord bless you and keep you
Make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you
The Lord turn His face toward you
And give you peace
Amen

Afrikaans Lyrics:
Die Here seën jou en behoed jou
Verhef sy aangesig oor jou en handel sagkens met jou
Hy ontvou jou met Sy liefde
En gee jou vre(d)e

"Now Thank We All Our God" (originally "Nun danket alle Gott") is one of the most famous Christian hymns of thanksgiving. It was written by Martin Rinkart around 1636 during the devastation of the Thirty Years' War. Despite facing famine, plague, and conducting up to 50 funerals a day—including his own wife's — Rinkart wrote this text as a testament to abiding trust in God

Verse 1 (English)
Now thank we all our God with heart and hands and voices
Who wondrous things has done, in whom His world rejoices
Who from our mothers' arms has blessed us on our way
With countless gifts of love and still is ours today.

Verse 2 (Afrikaans)
O God so ryk en goed, gee ons solank ons lewe
Altyd 'n blye hart, as dit U wil is, vrede
Laat U genade ons beveilig teen gevaar
In donker ure ons van struikeling bewaar

Verse 3 (English)
All praise and thanks to God, the Father now be given,
The Son and Spirit blest, who reign in highest heaven
The one eternal God, whom heaven and earth adore
For thus it was, is now, and shall be evermore.

Poem:
Seedling Star
Beneath a scattering of bulbul song
In the ripening heat
The earth uncurls with pincushion and buchu
And the fynbos dream of fire!
While far to the north, in the bitter winter cold
A star hangs over Bethlehem.

Seedling Star is a South African poem, written by Caitlin Macdonald (one of our Stunning Sopranos!) and adapted by Charl Keet. The joyful and religious Christmas carol celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ, by painting a picture of the landscape of Southern Africa, while on the other side of the world a miracle was occurring.
