Cape Town Philharmonic Youth

Cape Town Philharmonic Youth All the ensembles are sought after in the city's vibrant music scene where they are invited to give concerts.

The Youth Development and Education projects of the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra include the Masidlale Grassroots projects, Music Academy, three strings ensembles, junior wind band and flagship Youth Orchestra (CPYO) and Youth Wind Ensemble (CPYWE). Since the Cape Town Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (CPYO) and Cape Town Philharmonic Youth Wind Ensemble (CPYWE) were established nearly 20 year's

ago, the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra's youth education and development programme has become the most encompassing one in the country. Hundreds of musicians are tutored weekly at the CPO Music Academy based in Mowbray in theory and practice and the two ensembles rehearse there weekly, all during the school term. The grassroots Masidlale programme reachers learners from Langa and Khayelitsha, Gugulethu and Nyanga to the city bowl and the West Coast to teach strings, woodwinds and brass. Brandon Phillips and Faan Malan conduct the CPYO and CPYWE, respectively. For more information, please visit https://www.cpo.org.za/new/youthanddevelopment/

Performing in Khayelitsha was a highlight for the CPYO and CPYWE, marked by the audience's warm reception through a song, which extended a heartfelt welcome, and the energetic young conductor Olwethu Maceba, 17, alongside the youngest attendees, Enzokuhle Somana, 4, and Okwe Gqomorho, nearly 3. We were also delighted to see that music stays in the family with Ursa Major Engelbrecht, the wife of the CPO’s principal trombone Andrea Balocco playing in the CPYO’s double bass section. Charlene Verster and the CPYWE opened the concert with lively breezy band music, while Liam Burden and the CPYE concluded it with cinematic music, engaging the audience in song and dance. Our sincere gratitude to Khayelitsha for the warm reception; we look forward to returning. We extend special thanks to Tony Lachman and Nancy Krisch for generously covering bus transportation costs for over 100 young musicians and their parents. Appreciation also goes to Andrew Brown for capturing the moments through photography and to Nolizwi Monica Dadase and John Pakz Minnaar-Msimang for organizing the concerts efficiently.

Our Symphonic Adventures at the Baxter on Youth Day will be fun … and it will focus on all the instruments including one not usually associated with a symphony orchestra… a typewriter! It takes a lot of expertise to play it… and only special musicians can do it. Your host on the day, Aviva Pelham, is just the right one! Liam Burden is on the podium.
