The Drama Lab

The Drama Lab Musical Theatre training facility in the heart of Table View, Cape Town, South Africa 🇿🇦

ABOUT THE TEACHER
As an actress, Julie has played numerous leads in musicals such as Annie get your Gun (Annie Oakley), The Mystery of Edwin Drood (Drood), Carousel (Carrie), The Boyfriend (Maisie), South Pacific (Nellie), The King and I (Anna Leonowens) and Fiddler on the Roof (Golde), amongst other productions. She has been teaching in the “Arts and Culture” and Dramatic Arts context since 1981

(42 years) and was Head of Dramatic Arts at Elkanah House for 8 years. She is experienced in directing, using her vocal and performance expertise to train children, high school and adult students to hone their theatrical skills in productions, examination performances and auditions for tertiary training. Some of the productions she has directed are Joseph, Fiddler on the Roof, Hairspray, Our Town, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Honk, Into the Woods and Thoroughly Modern Millie. Curricular showcase work has featured Modernist 20th Century plays, Shakespearean, Post-Modern, Absurdist excerpts and Physical Theatre. She has a particular interest in training high school students and young adults in practical performance according to the textual needs of classical plays and musicals. Since 2016, Julie has been invested in her private drama school, The Drama Lab, where she trains serious young actors to combine the skill set known as the triple threat. In the heart of Table View, The Drama Lab is flourishing with about 60 students. ABOUT THE CONTENT OF CLASSES AT THE DRAMA LAB

Julie teaches all aspects of Dramatic Arts (acting, voice, body, movement, characterisation, improvisation, textual exploration, internal motivation and examination preparation). All pupils registered with The Drama Lab will complete examinations with Trinity College London, as examining body. In addition to a strong emphasis on Drama, all students at The Lab are expected to train in the discipline of Musical Theatre. While we are not primarily a dance or singing school, we incorporate these skills into the training. Students are expected to do theory and practical lessons at The Drama Lab to underpin their skill set and are encouraged to delve into the practices of Stanislavsky, Strasberg, Laban, Grotowsky and other practitioners. The rich journey TDL offers is intended to teach not only Dramatic know-how but also invaluable transferable skills. Our rallying cry is:

Know Your Worth
Find the Light
Protect the Work

Today we take our final bow for the TOMORROW CAST at 3pm and MAYBE CAST at 7pm of The Drama Lab’s Annie Jr. — and what an unforgettable 10-show run it has been… ALL SOLD OUT! 🤯❤️

To our incredible local community, the families, friends, supporters, the amazing staff from Table View Primary School, all our children’s schools, extra mural teachers, and every single person who travelled from near and far just to watch — THANK YOU. Your love, cheers, laughter, standing ovations, and support have meant the world to our young performers.

There’s something incredibly special about watching children pour their hearts onto a stage. Over these past weeks, we’ve watched confidence grow, friendships form, nerves turn into magic, and little performers shine brighter than they ever thought possible. ✨

A Drama Lab production is never just a show — it’s a family, a journey, and a memory that stays with us long after the curtains close. And as bittersweet as it is to say goodbye to Annie Jr., we are so proud of every child who stepped into the spotlight and gave it their all.

To our cast and crew: you made us laugh, cry, cheer, and believe that “The sun’ll come out tomorrow” really does mean something. ☀️

Thank you for making this production one we will never forget. Until the next standing ovation… ❤️👏
