The tall Bobo masks from Gossina, Burkina Faso (West Africa) are impressive ceremonial headpieces used in traditional performances. They are worn by dancers who secure the mask using a hidden internal bar held between the teeth, allowing the structure to extend high above the head. The designs are inspired by animals and are believed to connect the human world with the spiritual and natural world. The crocodile (second image) is especially significant as it symbolises strength and duality, representing an animal that moves between water and land.

The vibrant geometric patterns of the Ndebele people tell stories of heritage, identity and celebration. Renowned Ndebele artist Esther Mahlangu has brought this traditional art form to global audiences, masterfully blending centuries-old customs with contemporary expression through her bold use of colour and design.

Traditionally, Ndebele women repaint their homes during harvest season in preparation for weddings and initiation ceremonies, passing these artistic techniques down through generations. Today, these striking patterns remain a powerful symbol of South Africa’s rich cultural heritage.
