As part of our Advanced Mentorship Programme (AMP) - an elite selection process of our top 2% of CAS entries every year - Misha Schoeman, a Grade 12 learner from Curro Hazeldean, spent eight weeks being mentored by the brilliant Dr Bailey Snyman on her Acrobatic solo work...and this weekend, she put that work into practice at the American Dance Awards.

For her Lyrical Solo, '500 Miles', Misha received Ultimate Gold, an Ultimate Challenge Winner title and a Special Award, placed 2nd in her category, and achieved the 3rd highest-scoring Lyrical Solo overall. (Ultimate Gold is 95%-100%) 🏆

Her Acrobatic Solo, 'In Your Arms', also received Ultimate Gold and a Special Award, and placed in the Top 5 highest-scoring Acrobatic Solos overall.

And perhaps most exciting of all, Misha has now qualified to represent South Africa in Boston, USA, in 2027! 🇿🇦🇺🇸

Achievements like these are built by many hands. Misha is supported every step of the way by her mum, Madelyn, as well as Leap for Joy Dance Studios and Monique Grové Acrobatic Studio. We are so proud that the dedicated mentorship she has received from Dr Snyman through Curro Create’s Advanced Mentorship Programme has also become part of this exciting chapter in her journey.

Misha, you took the notes, did the work and made them your own. Thank you for sharing your gift for dance with us, too! ❤️

And now it's time to thank the Curro Create village.

Whenever our learners are held up to the light, the incredible talent that shines out of them may appear effortless - but it's ensured by a whole team of professionals who live, eat, breathe and sweat(!) the quiet work of Curro children succeeding in the arts.
These are the adults who want to make sure that our learners have the opportunities they dreamed about when they were in school. And this year, as usual, they didn't disappoint!

Thank you to our Curro Create core team: Penny, Marguerite, Carla, Coleusia and Hanlie.
Our leaders and founders: Marì, Hennie and Pedro.
Candice, our archivist, social media whizz and Curro Create ambassador who captures all the "real" moments on set and on projects - we are so grateful to have people like you on our side.

Sanda our MC and host who kept us alternately laughing and on the edge of our seats - with absolute ease.

As much as our learners win the trophies (as they should) - it's our village that deserves the applause this time around ❤️👏

After our projects have ended, the applause has gone silent and the lights have been powered down, there are some very important people who continue the bigger work with our learners.

A Curro Create parent understands that they are signing up for both tears of disappointment and whoops of victory; late nights in parking lots outside rehearsal venues while the director gives "just one more note" - as well as that sudden lurch of joy when their child is celebrated in front of their whole school; worrying about what they will do for a job one day if they study the arts..and feeling utterly at peace because they know their child is truly, completely happy down to their marrow.

Perhaps one of the greatest gifts a parent can give a creative child is permission. Permission to draw something strange. To sing loudly. To write the peculiar story. To dance. To make the film. To audition. To fail spectacularly. To try again. To choose the instrument. To make something that serves absolutely no purpose other than bringing something new into the world.

We don't need every creative child to become an artist. We need every child to know that being creative is a valuable way of being human.
And some of the best humans we know are the parents who give that permission freely and with an open hand. Thank you, we honour you 🙏🏼❤️

And this year, we’ve watched some beautiful friendships bloom across our Curro schools. The three learners in this video are from three different Curro schools, but somewhere along this journey, they became each other’s biggest cheerleaders. ⭐🎬

There is something so special about watching young people genuinely celebrate one another, lift each other up and be excited when someone else shines.

We just love Curro Create. And we really, really love our learners.

Her work across CAS, our Advanced Mentorship Programme, professional theatre and television, and original music production represents exactly what this award celebrates: curiosity, courage, versatility and an irrepressible need to CREATE.

We love hearing what the experience is like from their perspective, from stepping onto set and working with industry professionals to finally seeing their finished scene on the big screen.

And this time, we had some of the incredible Filmscape team join us for the screening too, which made the experience even more special. ❤️

Because behind every finished scene is a whole team of people bringing the story to life: actors, directors, crew, technical teams and so many talented people working together.

We’re so happy to be able to expose our learners to all of these different parts of the creative industry and give them a glimpse into what happens behind the scenes.

Motheo from Curro Midrand Halfway Gardens, and only in Grade 6, had the crowd in stitches with his scene from Everybody Hates Chris! 😂🎬

Here he is with his on-screen mom, Sive Gubangxa, and his actual mom, who were both so impressed by his performance. ❤️

Motheo, your comedic timing and natural ability are something really special. To see you carry such a scene with confidence and personality at such a young age is incredible.

Well done, Motheo! We are so proud of you and so excited to see what the future holds for you. ⭐🎥

Omi from Grantleigh had the whole crowd swooning with her beautiful rendition of a scene from Queen Charlotte. 🥹🎬❤️

Our Omi came 2nd in The Rising Stars category, and she also took home the special “Here’s Looking at You, Kid!” award, presented by Marvin Beukes to the learner he believes could walk straight onto a professional set today and work as a professional actor. ⭐

Omi, we are SO proud of you! Your talent, confidence and natural ability shine through, and we love seeing you embrace every opportunity that comes your way.

And just like us, your parents couldn’t be prouder. ❤️ A huge thank you to them, and to every teacher, mentor and person in Omi’s corner who continues to see her potential and support her journey.

One of our favourite moments? Hearing Omi’s parent say:

“Having Curro Create by your side, I am sure you will go far.”

We love hearing that our Curro Create families value these experiences as much as our learners do. Because behind every young creative is a support system helping them believe in what’s possible.

If you were casting a professional production tomorrow, which young performer could walk onto your stage or set and do the work?
That is the only question we put to our directors when choosing the recipient of our 2026 "Here's looking at you, kid!" Award. 🌟

This award recognises a young performer who has demonstrated the skill, discipline, emotional maturity and professionalism needed to hold their own in the industry. It is not simply about delivering a wonderful performance. It is about showing that you are ready to WORK.
Only learners from The YoungStars, The Rising Stars and The Stars are eligible for this award, as they have all received an equal amount of exposure to a professional working film set.
And this year, our director Marvin-Lee Beukes made his choice!

Ominathi Khumalo from Grantleigh in Richard's Bay delivered an extraordinary performance in her scene from 'Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story', acting opposite professional actor Oliver Carnegie.
Her performance demonstrated the kind of emotional intelligence, presence and commitment to the work that this award was created to recognise. To be able to step onto a professional set, work opposite an experienced actor and bring such authenticity to a demanding scene is no small achievement – particularly at her age!
Omi, we are SO incredibly proud of you! ❤️

Congratulations also to Mrs Amanda Mthethwa and the Grantleigh community for nurturing and supporting this remarkable young artist. The work that happens in our classrooms, rehearsal rooms and school halls is where so many extraordinary creative journeys begin.
At Curro Create, we believe in giving young people the opportunity to discover what they are truly capable of by working alongside industry professionals, learning through experience and being challenged to reach beyond their own expectations.
