For those in Cape Town.

A must see show at the Suidoosterfees..

'This is the story of a fifty-year-old transgender person from the Cape Flats. Today is the day she has been waiting for for years; her “gender-reassignment”. In the opening scene, she sits in underwear behind a sewing machine, busy stitching a dress together while she enjoys a Black Label and a cigarette.'

For artists, the Stellenbosch University Woordfees is more than excellent entertainment and food for thought. It is an experience where creative sparks fly – between art and audience, between concepts and ideas, and often between artists, generations, languages and cultures too.

The Woordfees festival programme offers a rich variety of inspiration for writers, theatre and film makers, actors and for classical as well as contemporary musicians. Artists, however, are not always able to afford festival attendance or to take in all the shows that pique their interest.

With its new Artist Bursaries initiative, the Woordfees offers five artists the opportunity to recharge their creative batteries and to fully experience the festival this year. All the Woordfees expects from bursary holders, is to share their festival experiences and their opinions on the shows they attended in a journal.

An Artist Bursary includes:
- R5 000 for travel and accommodation, to be used at the bursary holder’s discretion
- two meals per day in the VIP area for a maximum of five days
- free attendance of all productions/shows in the relevant genre, i.e. the genre in which the bursary holder is a practicing artist

In order to be considered for a bursary, applicants need to submit the following:
- between 300 and 500 words on why they will benefit from attending the 2018 SU Woordfees
- a short CV of the applicant’s artistic career with two references

Send applications to Danie Marais at [email protected] by the 12th of February 2018.

Please note: No late applications will be considered and no correspondence regarding bursary decisions will be entered into. Only artists who are in no way involved with the SU Woordfees 2018, may apply for an Artist Bursary.

For further information, contact Danie Marais at [email protected]

Truly amazing stories were told by 3 groups of super talented theatre makers from Mitchells Plain, Malmesbury and as far as Worcester brought their best. The challenge was creating a new piece of theatre in 48 hours based on a theme and genres. The themes you worked with was Betrayal, Good vs Evil and Justice and YOU DELIVERED. Ubuntu Arts, Abigail May and Carlo Daniels and Vusisizwe Drama Group not only did you show up but you DELIVERED..
You were all winners but this time the production that came out tops was ONWAAR, an Afrikaans production by Abigail May and Carlo Daniels.. Congrats to this talented who will be given a Theatrical run at both Sirvaun's Theatre and Makukhanye Art Room, Shack Theatre.
A HUGE thanks to our 'feedbackers' (yes we decided that the word Judge doesn't work for us) to Thami AkaMbongo, our first feedbacker, who not only gave me and the theatre makers some great advice with this project but also matched our cash prize winnings, To Flava media for your cash prize sponsorship, to Mandisi Mandisi Disi Sindo for your amazing advice to our Theatre makers. To Shihaam Domingo whose the Domingo effect will provide a session Branding and marketing themselves as Artists, and to Paul Savage who I only met once who I asked on the last minute to be a judge and agreed.
Especial thanks to the teachers and Principal of Vusisizwe High in Worcester for supporting the drama group to the event. To our amazing Theatre host Sirvaun Hickley who supported this event from the beginning, your continued guidance is truly appreciated. Also to Tracey Saunders who will be writing about our event.
And always to our audiences, Whose continued support is critical to our work.
We Cried, we loved, we supported these talented acts and we know this is the beginning of many more 48 hour Theatre Projects.
And if OUR STORIES CAN HEAL AND BRING US TOGETHER then here's to A MILLION MORE 😁✊💓

What an amazing time we had! It was wonderful showcasing That Comedy Show and the awesome 48hr Theatre Project!
