Secret Life
This sculpture is inspired by radiolaria—microscopic marine organisms that drift through the world’s oceans, unseen by the naked eye. Though they are made of a single cell, radiolaria form intricate, glass-like structures of extraordinary beauty and complexity. Their forms exist quietly, far below our awareness, yet they play an essential role in ocean ecosystems and the long history of the Earth.
By enlarging a radiolarian form in clay, I wanted to make the invisible visible—to give weight and presence to something fragile, ancient, and easily overlooked. The material transformation from microscopic silica to hand-built ceramic invites viewers to slow down and notice what usually escapes attention.
This piece is a reflection on scale, care, and responsibility. Radiolaria remind us that the health of our oceans depends not only on what we can see, but also on countless hidden lives that support it. Protecting the oceans means protecting these quiet, beautiful systems—even when we don’t realize they’re there.
