Meet The Pirate King, portrayed by Stephan le Roux

A commanding presence in The Pirates of Penzance, the Pirate King leads the pirate crew with confidence, charisma, and just the right amount of theatrical swagger.

Stephan brings a wealth of performance experience to the role. He graduated in 2001 with a Performance Diploma in Opera from the South African College of Music at the University of Cape Town, and has appeared in numerous operatic productions with both Cape Town Opera and SACM.

A long-time contributor to the Gilbert & Sullivan Society, Stephan’s previous G&S roles include Giuseppe Palmieri in The Gondoliers, Sergeant Meryll in The Yeomen of the Guard, Pooh-Bah in The Mikado, and Sir Despard Murgatroyd in Ruddigore.

His musical theatre experience also includes The Student Prince, Evita, My Fair Lady, The Wizard of Oz, and South Pacific.

With strong vocal ability, stage presence, and a long history with G&S repertoire, Stephan brings real authority and comic energy to this iconic role.

Did you know The Pirates of Penzance was made into a film? 🎬🏴‍☠️

The 1983 movie featured Angela Lansbury as Ruth and Linda Ronstadt as Mabel, bringing the beloved stage production to an even wider audience.

Stage: A bold new production of The Pirates of Penzance sails into Artscape -

You’ve met Frederic. Now get to know Renier van Rooyen, the performer bringing him to life in The Pirates of Penzance.

Frederic sits at the centre of this wonderfully chaotic story: a young man bound by honour, determined to do the right thing, and unexpectedly caught out by one very inconvenient technicality.

Renier is a baritone from KwaZulu-Natal, currently based in Cape Town, and a graduate of Stellenbosch University with a Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance. His experience spans opera and musical theatre, with credits including La Bohème, Les Misérables, and international festival productions in Italy and Austria.

Meet the Sergeant of Police, portrayed by Henco Hunter.

A high school teacher with a deep love for the stage, Henco has been active in theatre for the past nine years and brings strong performance experience to this comic role.

His stage credits include Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, Cabaret, Sister Act, The Yeomen of the Guard, The Mikado in Concert, and Fiddler on the Roof.

In The Pirates of Penzance, Henco takes on the role of the Sergeant of Police, stepping into one of the show’s most entertaining comic characters and bringing his own energy to this iconic production.
