Frederic’s face when Ruth and the Pirate King start discussing contract technicalities…

Turns out escaping a pirate apprenticeship is harder than expected when your birthday only comes around every four years.

In The Pirates of Penzance, one leap-year technicality is enough to turn Frederic’s future upside down and pull him straight back into pirate chaos.

Meet Isabel, portrayed by Karla Britz.

As one of the daughters in The Pirates of Penzance, Isabel brings warmth, expression, and connection to the stage, adding to the charm and energy of the ensemble.

Karla has been dancing since the age of three and developed her singing through choir work and formal music studies, earning a diploma in Music Performance at Stellenbosch University.

Her stage experience includes productions at Artscape and the Masque Theatre, including My Fair Lady, Legally Blonde, and the title role in Sleeping Beauty.

With her background in dance, music, and theatre, Karla brings a bright and expressive presence to Isabel.

Meet Edith, portrayed by Nicola De Jager.

As one of the daughters in The Pirates of Penzance, Edith brings charm, warmth, and lively energy to the stage, adding to the movement and personality of the ensemble.

Nicola is a Cape Town-based performer with a strong musical theatre background. She began dancing at the age of five before expanding into acting and singing, and later trained in musical theatre at LAMTA.

Since graduating, she has performed in The Yeomen of the Guard with the Cape Town Gilbert and Sullivan Society, as well as productions with Cape Town Theatre Company, Milnerton Players, and Pinelands Players.

With her dance background, musical theatre training, and bright stage presence, Nicola brings warmth and energy to Edith.

Meet Alastair Cockburn, Musical Director for The Pirates of Penzance.

Alastair has been associated with the Cape Town G&S Society since 1975, working as Musical Director, conductor, and accompanist across many productions and concerts.

He has conducted the complete Gilbert & Sullivan repertoire for the society, and this marks his 6th time working on the music of The Pirates of Penzance.
