Newlands Cricket Stadium came alive yesterday as the Sporting Chance Development Foundation and Lords Taverners (SA) hosted the Table Cricket Festival.
Table cricket is an adapted, indoor version of the sport of cricket, designed to be played on a tabletop.
It was created in the early 1990s specifically to give young people with physical disabilities the chance to play a competitive form of cricket in an inclusive, accessible way.
It emphasizes fun, teamwork, and sportsmanship rather than high physical demands.
The event brings together 100 boys and girls from seven special needs schools, competing in 14 teams in this inclusive and innovative version of the sport. Schools including Astra, St. Joseph's Marist, St. Joseph's Montana, Eros, Vista Nova, Jan Kriel, Thembelethu, and Filia took part, highlighting the power of sport to create opportunity, connection, and joy for young people of all abilities.

EFF leader Julius Malema has been sentenced to five years direct imprisonment in his firearm handling and discharge case.
Malema appeared in the East London Regional Court for a second day in his highly publicised sentencing.
The conviction stems from a 2018 incident during the EFF’s fifth anniversary celebrations at Sisa Dukashe Stadium in Mdantsane, Eastern Cape. A video showed Malema firing multiple shots from a semi-automatic rifle into the air in front of thousands of supporters.
He was convicted on five counts, including unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, discharging it in a built-up/public area, and reckless endangerment.

In affluent parts of Cape Town, Christmas sparkles for children with piles of gifts under grand trees, beach days at Camps Bay, lavish family meals, and twinkling lights everywhere.
On the poverty-stricken Cape Flats, joy shines more quietly. A single shared gift, simple meals with extended family, community songs, and warmth found in togetherness despite hardship.
The contrast reminds us that the true magic of Christmas often lies not in abundance, but in love, resilience, and shared hope, urging us to help every child feel seen and cherished.

In Ocean View, where childhood is too often shaped by danger rather than play, the days leading up to Christmas have offered a reminder of what community car...

It scolds the sea, shakes loose the sky,
Cape Town breathes deep as it rushes by.

From commuters clinging to lamp posts in the inner city centre to beachgoers sandblasted along Camps Bay, the Cape Doctor made its presence unmistakable this...
