Highlight of the Week!!

Today we are not simply learning games, storytelling and soccer activities. We are exploring how facilitators can use creativity, culture and play to build safe spaces for children during school holidays.

This workshop by the Gauteng Team embodies the core mission of ASSITEJ SA by promoting children’s right to access arts, culture and creative expression through indigenous games, storytelling and play.

These practices not only foster imagination, confidence, communication and problem-solving skills, but also position facilitators as custodians of indigenous knowledge, oral traditions and African cultural heritage.

By equipping teachers and facilitators with practical, arts-based learning tools, the workshop strengthens community-based creative development and expands meaningful cultural opportunities for children and young people.

In doing so, teachers are not only preserving culture and nurturing the next generation of creative thinkers and leaders, but also contributing to stronger, more connected communities where every child has the opportunity to participate, create and thrive.

YOUTH DAY
HONOURING THE LEGACY OF 1976

This Youth Day, ASSITEJ South Africa joins the nation in commemorating the courage, resilience, and sacrifice of the young people who stood against injustice during the 1976 Soweto Uprising.

As we reflect on their legacy, we are reminded that young people remain powerful agents of change. Their voices, creativity, and leadership continue to shape communities, inspire innovation, and build a more inclusive future.

At ASSITEJ South Africa, we believe that every child and young person has the right to participate in arts and culture. Through theatre, storytelling, music, dance, and creative expression, young people are empowered to imagine new possibilities, share their experiences, and contribute meaningfully to society.

Today, we celebrate the talent, passion, and potential of South Africa’s youth. We reaffirm our commitment to creating opportunities that nurture creativity, build confidence, and ensure that children and young people are seen, heard, and valued.

The youth of 1976 inspired change.
The youth of today will create tomorrow.

Happy Youth Day!

As part of its ongoing commitment to youth development through the arts, Building Our Future Production, the Limpopo Arts & Culture Council, and Bollanoto Radio delivered a successful Craft, Theatre and Music Workshop at Sekhukhune Hall in Phalaborwa.

Held in celebration of Youth Month under the theme “We Empower. We Create. We Inspire.”, the workshop brought together young people to explore and develop their creative skills in craft, theatre, and music. The programme provided a valuable platform for artistic expression, learning, and collaboration while encouraging greater participation in the creative and cultural industries.

We commend all partners, facilitators, and participants who contributed to the success of the workshop. Initiatives such as these play an important role in nurturing young talent and creating opportunities for the next generation of artists, cultural practitioners, and community leaders.

The workshop reflects a shared belief that youth are today’s creators and tomorrow’s leaders, and highlights the importance of investing in spaces where young people can learn, create, and thrive.

What happens when young people are given the space to imagine, create and lead?

In Emalahleni, Native Eye Creatives SA spent weeks walking alongside a group of emerging artists through their Breeding A New Artist (B.A.N.A.) programme. Together, they explored creativity, leadership and social awareness, discovering not only their artistic voices, but also their power to influence the communities around them.

The journey culminated in a powerful project presentation where participants used performance to reflect on "The Church" — examining its role, influence and significance within African communities. Through storytelling, movement, music and dialogue, young people were able to ask important questions, share lived experiences and engage with issues that matter to them.

This is what building a Youth based arts ecosystem looks like: creating spaces where young people are encouraged to think critically, express themselves freely and imagine new possibilities for their futures.

Every workshop, every conversation and every creative risk taken contributes to a generation of artists who are not only skilled practitioners, but active citizens and leaders in their communities.
