Final piece for this triptych. "Late Summer in West Kilbride" 2023. All materials were foraged from the land of the village I live in. My reason to start working with natural materials is an attempt to connect to the spirit of place. To learn new ways of communicating with nature and the more than human world. The inks in this painting were made with Beech nuts, spruce cones, red cabbage and a mystery ink I made months ago and forgot to label. I wasn't going to use cabbage. I thought it was a bit obvious but we grow a couple a year and this one had just come out the ground so I thought why not. I fought off the slugs and took off the outer leaves. Now, I expected the ink to be purple. And it was! Until it decided to change colour. Still now, in the jar it is purple but as soon as you put it on paper it turns a highschool shade of quink ink. The addition of aluminium sulphate causes the reaction but why in liquid form, is it still purple. That baffles me. Another day another mad science project
