Masque Theatre South Africa

Masque Theatre South Africa The Masque Theatre is a community theatre founded by Bertie Stern in 1959.

The Masque Theatre is a very active theatre and was created by our founder Bertie Stern in 1959 with the aim to encourage voluntary participation in all forms of theatre by all people. Before his death in 1993 he gave the Masque Theatre over to the 4 Dramatic Societies to run. Subsequently his estate created the Masque Theatre Trust to own the property, but responsibility of administration and ope

rating was to be undertaken by the Stern Masque Theatre Association The members of the dramatic societies currently represented on the committee elect this non-profit, voluntary body to office. The theatre was totally destroyed by fire in 1997, and it took two years to rebuild (thanks largely to the generosity of the late Joan St Leger-Lindbergh). It is now a first-class venue, seating 174, able to host live shows (musicals, dramas, dancing, etc.), seminars, presentations, film shows, and so on. Facilities and equipment include dressing rooms, excellent lighting and sound equipment.

South Africa's cult-classic theatre troupe, Baked Shakespeare, is in its 6th season (after sold-out runs across Cape Town, London, and the Edinburgh Fringe)! Join us for our chaotic take on the world's most famous love story: Romeo and Juliet.

Two star-crossed lovers from conflicting families fall into a reckless, all-consuming love and defy everyone to be together (think 2010s playlists full of Taylor Swift). Also: duels, banishment, and cruel twists of fate that spiral everything out of control!

Not really a tragedy (although it's very tragic), not really a comedy (although it's very funny), this is the most iconic ROMANCE ever written. Move over Twilight, Romeo and Juliet are in the house!

"The incorporation of cannabis and its heady effects within the performance, whilst seamlessly blending the rich language and complex emotions of Shakespeare’s plays, sets this play apart from the rest and is a novel way of bringing new audiences to the theatre." - CUE

Baked Shakespeare’s trippy take on Romeo and Juliet delivers electric chemistry, playful audience interaction (but no peer pressure we promise), outrageous musical numbers, and, of course … explosive sword fights, iconic moments, and a balcony that we can definitely afford to build!

Join our award-winning cast at The Masque Theatre for a psychedelic evening of classical performance with a twist, and some of the grooviest 420 vibrations imaginable. See for yourself why South Africa LOVES Baked Shakespeare (and why we were one of the "best/funniest shows in years" at the Edinburgh Fringe)!

Baked Shakespeare is a proudly weed-friendly show… and yes, the actors really do get high on stage, right before your very eyes!

If cannabis isn’t your vibe or you’re sensitive to smoke, we totally get it — this might not be your ideal night out. If you’re still curious, we recommend grabbing a seat towards the back for a more comfortable experience. Otherwise, this might be one to skip.

Book now ... while you still can.

Dead Dreams and a Drinking Problem is exactly that. A comedy show about chasing dreams, facing self-doubt, identity and drinking to numb the fear.

Robyn Dunlop is a woman over 30, past her prime, her dreams should be dead, but she is still dreaming! She hilariously explores why she developed a drinking problem instead of chasing her dreams and why she is most certainly not ready to give up yet!! Chasing dreams or drinking (just not as heavily)!

This to-the-point, honest, looking herself in the mirror exposition has Robyn calling a spade a spade, and a drinking problem a drinking problem in an awkward, bold and rampant stand-up comedy special.

The Masque is excited to present an evening of murder mystery with two live-stage audio drama murder mysteries, 'To Kill a Hadeda' and 'Crows'.

You'll witness two 40-minute audio dramas as voice actors and a foley artist conjure up a radio play before your very eyes.

TO KILL A HADEDA

Get ready for a hilariously dark, razor-sharp reflection of modern South Africa where the only thing louder than the gossip is the local birdlife. TO KILL A HADEDA strips away the pristine, manicured veneer of luxury estate living to expose the chaotic underbelly of elite suburban dread. When a tyrannical body corporate chairperson is found dead, a high-strung security estate goes into lockdown, forcing the eccentric community to root out the killer before the police arrive. This murder mystery comedy is written by Matthew Kalil and stars Brett Fish Anderson, Charles Tertiens, Jana Coetzee and Shirley Johnston.

CROWS

Prepare for a tense, moving and unexpectedly sharp look into grief and survival on the fringes of Cape Town. CROWS strips away the quiet, meditative peace of a wetland sanctuary to expose the raw, colliding worlds of two strangers trapped in their own personal storms. When a grieving widow's quest for solace is shattered by a desperate young man's arrival, a secluded bird hide becomes a pressure cooker of dark secrets and shared trauma. As their confessions intertwine, a dark omen gathers across the water, heralded by crows. This darkly comic murder mystery is written by Ian-Malcolm Rijsdijk and stars Shirley Johnston and Charles Tertiens.
