Darkroom Contemporary is a Non Profit Organisation using physical theatre as medium to facilitate these objectives:
• Creating employment opportunities for performers, technicians, project collaborators and organisational staff
• Offering training and exposure to the future generation of performers and audiences, through the Youth Theatre Initiative
• Initiating audience development opportunities

through exposing young audiences to physical theatre and dance film
• Opening up dialogue, fostering collaboration and facilitating skills exchange between performing artists and visual artists, film makers, musicians and designers through collaborative projects
• Actively promoting both dance film and physical theatre, art forms that are currently not well represented in South Africa

AUDITION NOTICE: In-person auditions for Darkroom Contemporary’s 2026/27 projects take place this month.

We invite applications from experienced professional dancers, with long term and project - based company contract available.

Recent graduates are invited to apply to our Apprentice Programme, a professional development programme.

Audition Date: Friday, 27 February 2026
Time: 11h00 - 13h00
Location: Cape Ballet Centre, 2 Hof Street, Gardens

We are seeking versatile male and female contemporary dancers with strong technical ability and solid performance experience.

Our founder and Artistic Director Louise Coetzer, at the China–South Africa Arts Innovation and Management Seminar in Beijing, running from October until 16 November 2025.⁣

This Capacity Building Programme in China is a collaboration between the National Arts Council of South Africa (NAC) and the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China, aimed at deepening creative exchange, knowledge sharing, and cross-cultural dialogue between the two nations.⁣

We can not wait to welcome her back into studio, and find out first hand, what inspiration and learnings she brings home!

We’re proud to share that our founder, Louise Coetzer, is currently flying the flag for South Africa at the China–South Africa Arts Innovation and Management Seminar in Beijing, running from October until 16 November 2025.⁣

Our annual fundraising event advances Darkroom Contemporary’s vision to be a catalyst for innovation, transformation, and preservation within South Africa’s contemporary performing-arts landscape. ⁣

Our mission is to reimagine dance through innovative and accessible work, blending contemporary dance with visual art, digital media, and interdisciplinarity. ⁣
