AfterlifeVisual

AfterlifeVisual Afterlife Visual is a AV VJ and DJ team made up of Craig Shackleton and Wayne Ellis. We specialize

Craig Shackleton and Wayne Ellis are Afterlife with 35 years collective experience in the Music, Visual & Entertainment industry. They have dedicated themselves to pushing the limits of Audio Visual technologies and through evolving their art-form have developed the skill sets necessary for Video Mapping, Sound Design, Music Composition, Live DJ/VJ performance, Video Editing & 3D animation. Afterl

ife have performed in several countries across the globe from Dubai to Nigeria, Angola, Kenya & across all the major cities in South Africa. Craig’s knowledge extends further into brand development & awareness. As an artist he has performed both locally and abroad and was solely responsible for the conceptualizing and creation of the Zen Chillout Series - a total of 10 discs of continuously mixed music showcasing the best international talent alongside top local artists for a holistic listening experience. Created with the environment in mind using recycled materials, a first of it’s kind in the country. Wayne has refined his audio abilities working with a wide range of local artists in all aspects of sound. His first international release on Blue Tunes Records saw him sharing the disc with top international releasing artists. He scored the soundtrack for a world cup stadium documentary; a German firm commissioned 15 minutes of original Electronic music with an African touch for their stunning time lapse sequences which documented every stage of construction of all the major stadiums from day one through to completion. A successful collaboration with a local composer followed as they were signed to EMI Records and commissioned by KPM Juice in London to produce a full CD of royalty free music in the spirit of the Africa in the exciting lead up to the world cup. The resulting music featured regularly on UK television networks throughout the event and continues to be used on adverts and by documentary makers around the world. Wayne worked for two years as a lecturer & mentor at City Varsity in the sound engineering department, interacting with students on a daily basis, maintaining all the technical aspects of the studios and exploring the creative education sector. In 2010 Craig & Wayne felt it was time to share their knowledge in the spirit of developing and expanding the VJ industry in South Africa. Thus began the process of distilling years of knowledge and experiences into a 12 week short course designed to effectively and efficiently equip students with the skills to become VJ’s and get themselves out onto the circuit. Many of those students are now kept regularly busy with new skills and for some it has become a sustainable way of earning an income. The goal of expanding and increasing momentum around the local VJ scene was achieved and this has been of benefit to the industry as a whole.

We have been in lockdown since March with no work, income or end in sight

The primary reasons given for the lockdown initially made sense... but as time has passed their credibility wears very thin indeed

As the potential for wet weather in my area prevented an outdoor projection tonight, I have dug deep into the archives and pulled up a 3D model of a building very precious to us

Cape Town, Circa 2010

It was here at the V&A waterfront where we [Afterlife Visual] executed our first large scale projection mapping for Wrigley’s and glimpsed a future of possibilities in a career path within a discipline largely unknown in our country at the time

We have been blessed to have had 10 beautiful years doing what we love and the pleasure of watching the software tools and the hardware toys evolve getting more and more exciting

And as I write these words the events industry is dying!

5 months with no work
5 months of being ignored by government

Click the hashtag to see all the buildings and objects my colleagues are lighting up to bring awareness to this matter

WTF is going on?!?!

The world has gone mad over COVID19 - did you know it has now been mentioned more 2.1 billion times in the media?!

It’s incredible to witness the effect this has had all over the world

Certainly feels like we are in times of great change, a global death and rebirth taking place, the crumbling of old structures and an acceleration of consciousness evolution

While at home β€œisolating” I decided to give this 3D model of the CV some real-time lighting and audio reactive shading in madmapper - and I needed some proper apocalyptic music to power this process

So I settled on Trifonic - Baalbek (Hecq remix)

May you all find whatever it is you need in this time of Social Distancing and isolation

Origin Festival is one of our favorite annual gatherings where friends from all over the world reunite for a weekend of full psychedelic immersion

We had the joy of mapping with 2x 15k laser projectors and a 12k laser beamer effectively filling the stage with projection and somehow missing all the poles in the way πŸ˜‰ with a p6 LED screen at the back as the cherry on top

However, this meant rapidly creating content for and managing 4 outputs

Being responsible for the tech at any festival usually ain’t easy, it’s rare that you plug everything together and it just works perfectly the first time πŸ˜† no no

Balancing our signal flow between NDI, black magic capture cards, fiber reels, SDI and more DisplayPort adapters then you can shake a stick @ was a cerebral task

It’s in those moments of confusion, sweat and dust that you need to dig deep and just keep going, trusting to Hope that sweet success is just around the corner

That moment where everything falls into place, content fits perfectly and software does not crash

There is one thing I’ll say that is always consistent for Origin and in particular at this last edition

The music fu***ng rocks!

Fav set of the night was Killawatts!

Bravo! Yoh!
