Q: What is one way you’d like the public to support artists and the art world during this time?

A: Visit galleries and exhibitions (virtually), spread the word, and give them your support if you appreciate their work. If you enjoy and appreciate their work, let them know. If you can afford it, purchase and display it proudly. Support the awareness they are creating for issues they feel strongly about. Since galleries are going to be closed for a while, use online media to visit art pages, share on social media. In general enjoy their art and let them know that you do!

ECLECTICA ASKS Marelise van Wyk
Q: Tell us a little bit about the art you are currently producing.
A: Over the past few years I have developed into a passionate printmaker almost by default and in the same way my current exhibition is a printmaking exhibition. I am fascinated by the process and love experimenting with as many printmaking techniques and processes that I can find. But maybe for a little while I would like move away from printmaking and explore new options and incorporate other mediums into my work.

ECLECTICA ASKS with Marelise van Wyk

Q: How has your artist process changed working in isolation?

A: Although I love the interaction, discussion and collaboration with other artists, my art process is usually an isolated one. I work at best on my own in my own studio. I need to feel able to occupy the space, spread out, experiment, make mistakes and play - on my own. However, this forced isolation messes with one’s mind a bit and can become a distraction rather than an opportunity for focused working. Suddenly there are no deadlines, no sense of urgency... Let’s see how it plays out. It will surely be a learning experience.

MARELISE VAN WYK Q&A

Q: What would you say is the role of the artist in times like these?
A: I don’t think the role of artists change in this time. What is the role of artists at any other time? Artists provide entertainment/enjoyment/beauty, touch lives. But also create awareness, make a difference in that way. I do not think that there is a general expectation here, an artist’s role is often determined by their own personal sentiments.

Follow along tomorrow for another Q&A!

Eclectica Print Gallery is pleased to welcome Marelise van Wyk, the winner of the 2019 Eclectica printmakers' competition to our gallery. Her solo exhibition Palimpsest will show for the month of April and will include a virtual print demo and live-streamed curator's walkabout.

Simon's Town based artist Van Wyk explains, "I am inspired by textures that are formed by erosion, corrosion and disintegration in nature as a result of the passing of time. In my artworks therefore, there are references to erosion, destruction, excavation. Through the use of imagery referring to historical structures, fossils, organic materials and strata, I attempt to relate to the paradox of expanding into the past".

Due to the current health risks surrounding COVID-19, we are unable to host an official opening event but will continue to welcome visitors of up to 10 people at a time. We are putting measures in place to ensure the safety of you and ourselves. The gallery will continue to monitor the situation and reassess weekly. Our team remains available for any queries or requests. We encourage you to also follow along virtually via our social media channels, like Instagram, Facebook and our website.

About Us

Eclectica Print Gallery houses a selection of fine art prints, specializing in iconic master prints by South African and international artists. We also host curated exhibitions that aim to promote the notion of print-based art, showcasing local artists who challenge and expand on the medium. Much like each of the Eclectica Galleries, Eclectica Print Gallery at its core aims to create a platform for emerging and established artists from Africa and the diaspora - promoting art that is authentic and current, while being accessible and universal.
