Eclectica Contemporary

Eclectica Contemporary Based in Cape Town, South Africa, Eclectica Contemporary sees itself as an African gallery with an international vision.

Eclectica Contemporary, based in Cape Town, South Africa is a contemporary art gallery focused on prioritising expressions and narratives from and of the continent of Africa and its diaspora. With an increasing focus on African Art around the world, Eclectica Contemporary aims to present a carefully selected and focused collection of art from the continent that interrogates the issues facing us in

a globalized world. The art at Eclectica often shows practices and materials familiar from art history but which push these boundaries and explore uncharted territories of representation, technique and theory. We celebrate the diversity and depth of art making on our continent while aiming to contextualize this for a growing global market. Our program of exhibitions shows a mix of solo shows by gallery artists alongside curated group shows. In addition Eclectica Contemporary's exhibition space has facilities for experimental, new media and project-based works.

We are excited to announce the opening of Mpho Feni's Solo show, Chulumanco. Join us this First Thursdays at 56 Church street.

This month at First Thursdays in Cape Town: Mpho Feni Solo ‘Chulumanco’ at

Eclectica Contemporary is excited to present Mpho Feni's first solo exhibition, Chulumanco. The exhibition title, derived from Xhosa, signifies happiness, an emotion sensitively rendered in Feni’s paintings. Highlighting this core emotion, we are drawn into the emotive presence of the artwork. The artist explores the merit of joyful emotions by portraying figures in close-knit formation. As emotions are an integral part of our experience, the artist’s paintings resonate with many, as Feni echoes relatable encounters in our own family gatherings.

Being born post Apartheid in South Africa, where inequalities have not been addressed, Feni presents an abundance of hope. Feni chooses to embrace the new South Africa with positivity and care, making the act of celebration a right of passage that the artist embraces, shares and recreates. His work invites us to pause, breathe, and pay homage to celebratory moments.

Eclectica Contemporary is excited to present Serge Diakota Mabilama’s work in our upcoming exhibition opening in February! Mabilama is a Congolese visual artist who resides and practices in Kinshasa. Domestic objects enter a new discourse through Diakota’s creative process of mixing various techniques such as engraving, painting and collage.

Diakota’s work invites the viewer to reflect on transition, movement and migration as an attempt at creating a universal identity, while contributing to the discussion of moving Congolese art beyond geographical borders.

Keep an eye out for more of this artist's exciting work on our upcoming exhibition to be announced very soon!

2020 highlights! Reflecting on the past year has reminded us of the triumphs and challenges, the successes and the joys. We’ve been honoured to meet many new and wonderful people - from artists to collectors, to writers and dancers. Although art fairs and exhibitions shifted into new formats throughout the year we loved starting out with Nina Holmes’s solo booth at alongside our booth in the main section. The thrill of rushing off to Marrakech for the was complimented by a sell out booth for our incredible Hussein Salim, our first time exhibiting in Marrakech and beginning our ongoing collaboration with Mimouni El Houssaïne.

Swipe through for some memories and artwork highlights.

🎉Thank you for making our year filled with so much goodness to cherish and remember. Here’s us wishing you and your loved ones a fantastic 2021 to come! ✨

Yasmine Yacoubi’s 25 year painting journey has now culminated in a focus on the vitality and the forces of nature. Her surrounds and their continuous transformations are her main sources of both fascination and inspiration. What guides her has always been what she sees, hears and touches around her.

Our Story

Eclectica Contemporary opened in July 2016 and is part of the Eclectica Galleries family. Based in the heart of Cape Town’s CBD, we are housed in a beautiful historic building with exhibition spaces across multiple floors. Our focus is to promote and encourage narratives and creative expressions from and of the African continent and its diaspora, through a mixed programme of solo exhibitions by represented artists and curated group shows. We also host a variety of additional events like workshops, walkabouts, curator-led tours, school visits and external activations.

Our exhibition programme confronts lived realities, current and topical events and issues and aims to highlight a celebration of creativity and the importance of artistic expression through vibrant, dynamic and engaged practices.
