The has been included in the exhibition Freedom and Control, currently on view in New York from February 6 – March 28, 2026

The exhibition explores the passport as both a real and imagined object, a document that holds dreams, possibilities, and restrictions at the same time. While passports promise freedom of movement, they are also instruments through which states regulate and control mobility. Some passports open borders with ease, while others severely limit the ability of citizens to move beyond their own countries.

Working across sculpture, photography, book arts, and installation, the artists in Freedom and Control examine and deconstruct this powerful document, questioning its role as a tool of state authority, identity, and access.

The inclusion of the Artworld Passport in this context places the project within a broader global conversation about movement, belonging, and the politics of mobility.

Artists in the exhibition include Khalid Albaih, Sandi Hilal and Alessandro Petti, Khaled Jarrar, Priya Suresh Kambli, Groana Melendez, Richard Mudariki, and Bayaté Ross Smith.

We are proud to announce an institutional association between the Iziko South African National Gallery and the Artworld Passport, formally recognising the passport as an access instrument during Cape Town Art Week 2026.

For the duration of Art Week, holders of the Artworld Passport will receive complimentary access to Iziko South African National Gallery and select participating museums in Cape Town, affirming the project’s commitment to cultural mobility, participation, and public engagement.

The Artworld Passport is a singular conceptual artwork by Richard Mudariki that unfolds across multiple holders. While it exists in numerous physical passports, the artwork itself remains one unified conceptual work distributed across individuals and institutions. It interrogates systems of access within the global art ecosystem - transforming the bureaucratic language of permission into a performative and participatory artistic gesture.

The work is currently being showcased at the Investec Cape Town Art Fair, following successful international presentations in New York (2024) and Basel (2025). Its institutional acknowledgement in Cape Town marks a significant moment - bridging independent artistic practice with public museum infrastructure.

This association is important not only symbolically but structurally. It positions the passport as both artwork and cultural instrument - one that activates movement, dialogue, and institutional engagement within the African context. It reframes access as a shared civic act rather than a restricted privilege.

Investec Cape Town Art Fair is more than an art fair, it’s a platform for discovery, dialogue, and cross-cultural exchange. We are again honoured to be part of this global conversation and can’t wait for the art world citizens to engage with our presentation in the Cabinet/Record section.
