Black Dog: The Refuse/al
Artist: Oupa Sibeko

‘Dogs have long occupied a complex and charged relationship with humanity. In South Africa, and particularly in relation to Black life, this relationship is deeply vexed. During the Soweto Uprising of 1976, it is widely recounted that the first shots were fired after a police dog, set upon protesting students, was killed — variously described as having been stoned or stabbed. The uncertainty surrounding the dog’s death is telling: not because the detail matters more than the outcome, but because it reflects how acts of resistance are often rendered ambiguous, while state violence is rendered absolute. In this telling, the violence began with a dog.

Here, we are asked to witness a dog standing up for itself. The suffering of urban stray dogs becomes allegorical — a mirror of the suffering of the urban poor. Within this lexicon, the Black Dog emerges as resilient and commanding, a figure of survival and presence, reflecting the movement of Black lives through urban Cape Town: a city that has often been hostile, unwelcoming, and cold to Black and Brown bodies.’

Title: Block Dog: The refuse/al
Artist: Oupa Sibeko

Black Dog, is a liminal, temporal and corporeal experience. Explored through movement and photography, while still making confrontation as play.

The body is split between memory, recollection and the past whilst the present is the live body wrestling with a state of mind as a way of ritual and healing.

CHURCH presents a group exhibition,

what we do not say

Silence is never neutral.
It holds survival, complicity, intimacy.
It echoes with what’s withheld,
with gestures that resist language.

This exhibition brings together works
that trace silence as a political and emotional act —
from the red thread of desire and memory
to the weight of withheld gazes.

This exhibition show times will be
Wednesday - Friday from 10am to 3pm
Saturday from 10am to 1pm

‘I do believe in life after death because I come from an ancestral Black education where we believe in parallel lives and realities. There is no “after death”, “before death” or “during life”. It doesn’t matter that much. I believe in energies – living or dead – and in cosmic strength.’ -
