I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and everyone who came to Ziyana. Everyone who left reviews, the panelists who gave their hearts to the discussion of storytelling after one of our runs. These contributions grow me as an artist and give me room to reflect on the multiple meanings that you all draw from my collaborative works. It is comforting to create knowing that there's a community waiting and willing to receive your work. Nenze kanje nakwabanye abafana nam. Ndibamba ngazibini.

From what inspires them to how they collaborate with others, the speakers shared their reflections on Ziyana. The conversation was facilitated by Ntshadi Mofokeng.

Change begins within oneself then saturate to the rest of the people around.

What other affirmations, manifestos can we add here to enrich our creative processes and affirm black women creatives?

With Ziyana, I hope we begin a conversation that reflects on the type of storytellers we are, how we can build relationships across disciplines, draw on our cultural backgrounds, and most importantly, one that can see women celebrate and embrace everything that comes with being a woman in the arts industry.

I hope we can reflect as a collective, sharing ideas on how to build conducive and sustainable working environments

When I pitched Ziyana to funders, I wanted to co-create a story with my community that showed the challenges young mother's face in the Theatre industry. It really was about consciousness building, awareness raising, and working together to solve the sector's problems, but once I understood what I was trying to do and understood the themes I was exploring by reading various resources on Inclusion, Accessibility and Fairness, I was able to adapt what I was learning for my local context through the script and to create a working manifesto with the creative team that enabled us to play and to dream.

ZIYANA

In a family of storytellers - the youngest, Diana, is waiting for her ancestors to unveil her storytelling gift so that she knows what type of storyteller she is. Her Grandmother and Mother wait anxiously because she is supposed to have received her gift by now.

The play was written to create mechanisms for helping women and vulnerable groups articulate how they experience the theatre and dance industry in South Africa; to understand and dismantle the working culture in the theatre industry which has resulted in the disempowerment of women who are parents and caregivers; and lastly, to emphasize the need for African women to speak about their experiences and to bring their perspectives and interests to the table - Ziyana is a dream space for young black professionals.

Ziyana opens at Theatre Arts on the 7 - 12 March
